For the first time in the nation, gun makers and dealers are now liable for injuries or deaths caused by the criminal use of their weapons, under a landmark law signed yesterday by Mayor Bloomberg.
The law one of four bills signed regulating gun sales and possession goes further than any other city's effort to hold the gun industry financially responsible for crimes involving their weapons.
"We need to do everything we can to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and out of the hands of children," said Bloomberg. "There's just no argument here. Guns kill people, it's time to get them off the street."
City lawmakers took more than two years to hammer out the legislation, continuing

Just out of curiosity, wasn't all those previous anti-self defense/anti-firearm laws passed supposed to have made NYC a haven of peace and tranquility already?
/dripping sarcasm
"...multiple sales to one person..." Guess I missed that aspect of the RKBA.
Bloomberg is a POS, but then he accurately reflects the values of most New Yorkers.

ACtually, he doesn't. The haterd of Bloomberg among "common folks" is real, and mostly ignored by the far-left NYC media. Hang out in any bar, bowling alley, subway stop, etc., mention Bloomberg's name, and prepare yourself for a stream of obscenities.
The problem with this guy, besides his politics, is that he is a smug, arrogant, obnoxious micro-manager who bascially thinks that everyone besides himself is a moron. Another secret- he is gay. I have several freinds who work in NYC restaurants, and back before Bloomy was mayor he used to disappear into the wine cellar with some virile young men. Of course, unlike McGreevey, this guy has enough $$$ to make his loverboys keep quiet.
Sounds like a plan.
You would think he would have hung out with enough Republicans to know better.
Conversely, if you want off my ping-list, let me know.
And my apologies for any redundant pings.
From another Article
The City Council also voted 43-2 to raise the minimum age for rifle and shotgun permits from 18 to 21. A fourth provision, passed 41-4, restricts dealers from selling more than one rifle or shotgun to an individual within 90 days.
This holds every dealer liable in the country.
I can't see how they can enforce it, but then this is the city council of NYC, its like the soviet politburo, they can pass anything they want.
Freddie Ferrer in this case. and yes, having lived in NYC under Dinkins, I would rather have Bloomberg then Ferrer.
Nice work, Mayor Bloomberg - let's give the man a swastika armband to go with his new policy.
"One measure, approved 43-2, would hold liable dealers nationwide who sell more than one gun to the same person within 30 days."
That seems IMHO to be clearly unconstitutional.
Bloomberg and the entire council who voted for this should be impeached.
They will be tried in NYC civil court. Which lately is anything goes regardless of laws, protections, legal precedent, or even signed contracts. Its all based on the whims of a judge.
Then why did they vote for him? He represents the majority of the NYC VOTERS at any rate.
WHEN when when will gunmakers and ammunition makers and dealers stop all sales to jurisdictions like this one? Sorry police department, no guns for you, you're boss is trying to put us out of business. Better, they could announce a product recall of all the guns sold to the police departments. If a police officer refuses to surrender their weapon, and then later shoots anyone - even a criminal - with the recalled gun, the possibility of megabuck lawsuits against the police department and/or the city will then arise.
How the heck can the NY City Council hold liable dealers nationwide? There is no way this can stand up to review.
Note to Republican party voters:
In the next republican primary...wherever and whenever it is...please be sure to ask your candidate where they stand in regards to this particular piece of legislation.
Take particular note for the 2008 presidential primary.
Yeah. If I'm going to get torpedoed, I'd rather be torpedoed by an avowed enemy than a lying, two-faced, hypocritical skunk like Bloomberg. Bloomberg isn't even in the same class as a RINO. He is a Democrat who ran as a Republican in order to defeat someone in the Democratic Party.
Bloomberg is what he sounds like.
Issued duty weapons (currently the Glock 19, Sig Sauer P226 and S&W 5946 along with some old revolvers still floating around) become the property of the invidual officer. Backup guns are purchased privately by officers. I'm not sure about the ESU (SWAT) longarms. Guns that are taken as evidence are melted down after trial, tragically...
I've heard that some real beauties and vintage guns have met their fate this way. Sad, but not surprising, that the city won't take advantage of another possible revenue stream.
