China has deep tentacles in the American economy: It turns out that China owns outright or has large interests in a surprising number of well-known “American” brands

Back in the 1980s, the big fear was that Japan was buying up America. At the start of the third decade of the 21st century, the fear is that China is buying up America, a threat much more potent than Japan ever was. Unlike China, which expanded by building a better mousetrap, China’s reach is predicated upon Marxist expansionism, military and private-sector espionage, corrupt business practices, slave labor, and a large military.

Investing.com assembled a list of 76 American brands that China owns in whole or in part. (There are also companies that Hong Kong owns but China’s aggressive inroads in Hong Kong makes that something of a distinction without a difference.) Here are some of the more surprising entries in that list:

AMC Theaters, which is the largest movie chain in the world, started life in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1920, as American Multi-Cinema. From 2012 to 2018, though, China’s Dalian Wanda Group, which operates out of Beijing, was the majority stakeholder.

In 2018, Silver Lake Partners, a private equity company in Menlo Park, California, invested $600 million in AMC, which gave it 32% of Dalian’s class B common stock. However, the way the deal was structured, despite owning slightly less than 50% of the common stock, Dalian still has majority control over the board of directors. In other words, Dalian controls what movies people around the world can see.

The wrench in the works, of course, is the Wuhan virus. In October 2020, AMC reported that it was running out of money and could have no cash left by the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021. It will be interesting to see whether Dalian uses this situation to buy out Silver Lake Partners and re-up its hold on AMC,

When you buy GE appliances, you think you’re buying appliances from an American company with roots stretching back to 1892. What many of us missed is that, beginning in 2016, GE appliances, which is headquartered in Boston, became a subsidiary of Haier, a Chinese company headquartered in Qingdao, China, bought GE.

Do you own a Lenovo Computer? It used to be IBM’s Personal Computer Division. It is now headquartered in Quarry Bay, Hong Kong. Back in 2005, announced that its Personal Computer Division had been acquired by Lenovo, who paid $1.25 billion for the pleasure. The Chinese business poured a lot of money besides that into IBM too. According to the statement, “Additionally, Lenovo will assume approximately $500 million of net balance sheet liabilities for IBM.”

That kind of money is almost impossible for any business to refuse, even one as famous as IBM. Japan and China are known as technology meccas, so perhaps it makes sense that Lenovo would want to expand its reach even further.

What about one of our biggest Car company - GENERAL MOTORS?

While General Motors isn’t entirely owned by a Chinese company, it does rely on its partnership with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp to keep the money rolling in. Both of the companies formed a joint venture in 1998. SAIC sells companies under the General Motors name, even if customers don’t realize it. SAIC has its headquarters in Shanghai, while GM has theirs in Detroit.

At its core, General Motors still remains a very American brand with American values, but every company needs a helping hand sometimes. In this case, it’s a beneficial partnership that allows the brand to experience the best of both worlds.

Movie theaters are toast, but will make excellent indoctrination centers.

What about the celebrated ELON MUSK and his iconic electric car: TESLA?

Elon Musk might be the brains behind Tesla and the majority shareholder with 21.7%, but he isn’t the only one pumping money into the automotive company. There are plenty of shareholders, including Tencent Holdings Ltd. Tencent isn’t just into music, but a variety of things.

Tencent is the world’s largest video game company and one of the largest social media companies, making it a force to be reckoned with. In 2019, it had a net income of $95.8 billion, so whatever they’re doing, they’re doing it right. At the moment, the company is still on the up and up.

As for Tesla, the brand is more than just a luxury car manufacturer. The success of the company arguably gave Musk the capital he needed to launch his other projects, including SpaceX. When it comes to technology, we have a lot to thank Tesla for....and CHINA, which now has the technological capability to compete with the USA through their partnership.

When I first read that article and began telling friends about the number of US companies owned outright or in part by the CCP, lots of them almost couldn't fathom it.

If you think about it, what better way to take the US than just buying it lock stock and barrel?

I doubt whether the CCP would ever try to nuke us into submission, because they want our tree-lined streets and clean air. Those two things are really important to them. Also, all our farmland. And us as their slaves to work the farms.

Yep. They tried to install Communism here for decades. Finally it occurred to them: why not move all production to where the Communism is already in place? I think it started with Clinton, but I don't know for sure. Bush went along with it.

Lenovo owns 51% of Japan’s Fujitsu’s PC unit , and last I heard 51% of NEC’s shares . With the Lenovo brand they have 40+% of the Japanese computer market .

They don’t have to nuke us.

Just engineer and virus that really only affects white people and people with white ancestry.

CCP virus isn’t really doing anything in Africa or Asia...

Does China need to disclose if they invest in Private Investment companies like Bain Capital, or Biden International?

How much do they own that is under the radar? Like the 160,000 acres of prime farmland owned by Smithfield, owned by China.

They made mega bucks shipping the cheap Smithfield hams to China when the disease killed their domestic pork production.

Ford made cars that looked like VW Beetles with rubber fenders that they flooded the European market with.

I think they were called the “KA”.

Your comment about GM illustrates why a lot of this talk is just silly, misleading semantics.

If you want to buy an American-made car, you’re better off buying one from a Japanese of Korean company. If you buy an “American” car it’s likely to be a Mexican one.
