Not so ‘Free Republic’: The Shot Heard Around the Net
The Conservative Voice ^ | Feb 11, 2005 | by William Gheen, President, Americans for Legal Immigration PAC

Posted on 02/11/2005 10:55:36 AM PST by Jim Robinson

The shot heard around the Internet has been fired on FreeRepublic.com The owner Jim Robinson and his moderators have launched a sniper style purge against members that disagree with the President’s ‘guest worker’ amnesty or support more control of illegal immigration. Free Republic is an amazing tool for those looking for a good debate and news from around the country.

The problem for the administration of the site is that their creation is allowing the participants to learn that the Bush immigration record and plans are shockingly out of line with the views of most conservatives. The management’s answer to this conflict between the majority of conservatives and the influence of the White House on their Web site has become electronic executions and censorship.

Members and readers of Free Republic would be surprised to know that many members of their community have fallen silent on the discussions about illegal immigration lately because free speech is an illusion on FR.com. They are silent because they have been banned from the Web site without warning, cause, or explanation in most cases. For weeks the moderators have been suspending and banning new members that chimed in quickly on the immigration debates.

Now this trend has broadened as the first groups of long-term users were suspended or banned this past week. Although Robinson and his staff removed many members of the Free Republic community in the first few days of the purge, those that religiously support President Bush’s immigration plan, open borders and approve of public benefits for illegal aliens remain on the forum. Those that were banned were the members that wanted more done to control illegal immigration and a strict observance to the President’s Oath of Office.

I'm not sure about the latest purge being 100% counter-Bushbots....during the election runup that was the case to be sure....we also had some folks zotted for opposing the Iraq war even before the election runup.

and of course we have DUmmies zotted frequently

just my opinion.

I suspect you often feel you have gotten the best of people in arguments.

I suspect that is projection on your part.

But how exactly will we "lock" the borders?

Aren't there very long unguarded stretches where the criminals can easily wander across?

Wall, electric fence, what?

BTW, I'm not trying to be sarcastic, because I think being able to close the border is a good idea. The question is how?

What is your opinion of Sensenbrenner's bill allowing guest workers ONLY when they apply from their own country?

I think it is a good compromise, if it is coupled with actual prosecution of employers of illegals, doing away with "anchor babies", and refusing welfare of any kind to illegals.

I like the policy. Keeps FR respectable.

I agree. There are a couple of other kook attracting topics that I wish were added to the thread-delete/poster-ban policy too. (It's probably for the best that I'm not making those decisions though.)

Despite this article being incorrect, it is very poorly written - my 8th grader can write a better opening paragraph than this - the last sentence in the opening paragraph is just kind of hanging there - lol

Well well well, what have we here? I poke my head in after one of your out-of-control moderators “punishes” me on December 22 for defending my views within the rules in a thread, and what do I find? Freepers getting fired from their real-world jobs for being backstabbing liars, Kim Jong-Ilish purges by you of those who you disagree with and want to silence, private Freepmail getting reprinted in the Washington Post. Sure looks like its all slipping away from you, Jim. Sorry about that ;)

It really is a uniquely circular and closed little world you run here, Jim. Newbies who find your web site and want to participate are bound by a very specific (and unwritten) set of rules: “Don’t express your opinion on controversial topics or you’ll be banned”, “Don’t post on certain threads or you’ll be banned”, “Shut up and accept and loudly agree with anything you see posted by an old hand and/or Howlin or you’ll be banned”, “Do not presume to question an old hand and/or Howlin or you’ll be banned”, “Besides Jim Robinson, Howlin is your god and don’t you ever forget it or you’ll be banned”. I think you get the idea.

Your ridiculous justification of your silencing of William Gheen and banning of material from Alipac because a few disruptors sometimes post racist material there is laughable. Considering that some Freepers can and do routinely refer to non-terrorist Muslims as “sand niggers” “Islamokazis”, and other despicably childish names with no fear of banning or punishment, this pathetic intellectual fig leaf you wear is the lowest sort of hypocrisy. Not to mention the Terri Schiavo fanatics you egg on who are conducting a real high-tech lynching of a grieving husband whose only "sin" is trying to stop his stricken wife's pain as she requested.

Nazi sympathizers, racists (as long as it is white-on-black racism of course), and even those who advocate the shooting of people they don’t like all have a voice and a home on FreeRepublic, just as long as they are not newbies.

How much do you want to bet that this poster will remain in good standing on FreeRepublic?:

“Meanwhile, I am just waiting on Federal Hunting Licensing for US citizens to police the borders. A good plan would include bounty and no bag limit …”

You have the right under the law to ban whomever you please from your site, Jim. But you obviously know by now that doing so does not mean that those you ban are simply going to shut up and go away. When you and your out-of-control moderators ban people then your indoctrinated flying monkeys such as MeekOneGOP, bmwcyle, Howlin, Grampa Dave, and Coop treat them rudely and offensively and post funny kitty pictures as sport, you should know by now that bad karma is its own punishment. And as people like Joseph Steffen have discovered to their detriment and pain, those who you and your harpies drive off from your site will not simply sit down, shut up, and take it. And no amount of foot-stamping and chin-quivering on your part will change these facts.

A piece of parting advice (for I am gone and will not stick around to accept the abuse that will surely come raining down on me for posting this from what has become the North Korea of the Internet): Rein in your flying monkeys soon Jim, before they literally become you. I know that you don’t routinely nuke accounts in order to pad your statistics, but I am hoping you will make an exception in my case.

(Jim Robinson talking about George W. Bush)

“Well, by God, if you people insist on electing another cokehead as President, you damned well better throw open all the prison cell doors and free every man, woman, and child you're holding on drug charges. And if you're gonna elect another drug felon as President, you'd better rescind each and every one of your unconstitutional drug laws now on the books, including all of your unconstitutional search and seizure laws, and your asset forfeiture laws, and your laws that enable your unconstitutional snooping into our bank accounts and cash transactions. Well, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. You people are sick! Conservatives my ass. You people are nothing but a bunch of non-thinking hypocrits! You're a shame and a disgrace to the Republic! And, I, for one, am tired of taking orders from cokeheads and felons! Elect another one and I'll tell you what. I'll be ready for war! It'll be time to take up arms and run the filthy lying bastards out!”

“Bush is so clever that he's got all the right-wingers thinking he's a liberal. And this strategy is just to garner the swing voters who tend to be lefties. But there's more of them than there are right-wingers so it's a good gamble. Then after he wins the Presidency then he's gonna make a major swing back to the right (he is a conservative, after all), laugh at his liberal supporters and welcome the right-wing back into his compassionate conservative fold. He's so clever that he's just about the first guy on the planet to manage fooling all the people all the time.”

Why is there more of a crackdown on anti-illegal immigration FReepers than pro-amnesty FReepers?

(And please don't try to tell me Bush's proposal isn't an amnesty. It is.)

Did you mean the Know Nothings? AKA the American Party? I think they ran strictly on anti-immigrant platform if my recollection is correct.

Most people EVOLVE over a six year period.

That, of course, cannot be said in your case.

Members and readers of Free Republic would be surprised to know that many members of their community have fallen silent on the discussions about illegal immigration lately because free speech is an illusion on FR.com.

Poor dopes never seem to realize that "free speech" is something protected by the Constitution from encroachment by the government. It was to protect political organizations and the publishing of their ideas. Those organizations are free to exercise editorial control. Such control is not an assault on free speech. It is free speech.

Most had probably been warned before or were found to have been previously banned. (I assume that if you're banned once and come back without permission you will be banned again as soon as you're discovered.)

You would hope so and think so, but in this case you would be wrong.

If you ask me these people weren't "ZOTted", they were LOTTed. As in, they were banned for the same kind of reasons that Lott got in trouble for wishing Strom Thurmond a Happy Birthday. Some people are soooo afraid with being associated with some sort of perceived racism or racist slight or whatever that they'll throw good people to the wolves. In my opinion, most of those purged are victims of political correctness. It is shameful that Free Republic is starting to go PC after all of these years. But, hey, it's Jim's sandbox. He can do what he wants...

But it's kind of like a tree falling in the forest. If no one bothers to listen to him anymore(except for Potato Head Russert), does it matter? He has zero credibility. How many people give a spotted owl's behind what al gore has to say? This weekend, we'll probably have the deaniac all over the talking head shows.
