MANIFESTO OF THE WPPFF/WILD TURKEYS/COALITION OF THE SANE
Me. | 29MARCH05 | Long Cut

Posted on 03/29/2005 8:58:34 AM PST by Long Cut

We, the Witness Protection Program For Freepers, aka the Wild Turkeys, aka the Coalition of the Sane, have through mutual discussion and rigourous thought, determined that:

1. The discussion threads regarding Terri Schiavo (hereafter referred to as "TS") have become too full of innuendo, rumormongering, hyperbole, hysteria, namecalling, paranoia, and general poor behavior to warrant participation.

2. Said threads have degenerated into "echo chambers", wherein the same, common thoughts are continually posted again and again, and the same old disreputable, unconfirmed and/or false urban myths are propagated.

3. Anyone who joins in said theads with alternative viewpoints to the most extreme posts are routinely driven away with slander, accusations, and vile namecalling.

4. No data or evidence contrary to the "prevailing opinions" are accepted, considered, or discussed; and in fact are rejected outright in most instances.

5. That the continued calls for armed insurrection, military or paramilitary involvement, impeachements of politicians and judges, and death threats are embarassing, stupid, shortsighted, doomed to failure, and contrary to most if not all conservative thought prior to this case, as well as damaging in the extreme to FR and the conservative movement as a whole.

6. That such emotional, hyperbolic, and propaganda-driven hysteria is in fact contrary to all conservatives USED to stand for.

7. That the holding up of swastika and other Nazi imagery towards the police and the Bushes, the use of children as political props, and the disruption of the peace at the Woodside Hospice can only reflect badly on conservatives in general, and should be discouraged.

8. That the pursuit of this issue to the exclusion of all others by the GOP has damaged, perhaps beyond repair, the pursuit of other important issues as well as the reputation of the GOP, FR, and conservatism.

The WPPFF is NOT of one mind as to the case of TS or its correct outcome. In fact, wide disagreement exists within our little group. However, we are united in our wish that reason and sanity be respected in the discussion, as well as the rights of all parties involved or participating. We wish to discuss this as adults and intellectuals, as conservatives and as FRiends, not as children screaming past each other on some playground of hysteria. We wish for facts and evidence to be provided, discussed reasonably, and considered fairly.

We reject all accusations of Naziism, "death cultism", or other slander as methods of debate. We reject the practice of "spamming" multiple threads, of posting unending vanities, and the posting of propaganda and calls for violence. We reject, in fact, all unseemly and childish behavior which has come to characterize this case on FR.

We DO invite others to come and reasonably discuss the issue. We have no problem with FReepers who wish to debate in a rational and fair manner, and with due respect for their fellow FReepers. We have NO problem with those whose views are formed by religion; however we reject "preaching" or "being beaten with a Bible" as legitemite debate tactics. Not all of us are Believers, and such tactics only cheapen the source.

If a FReeper finds this an acceptable meansd to discuss this and other issues, they are welcome to join in and participate. Those who find pleasure in attacks, flame-baiting, slander, stalking, and personal atacks will be ignored, and their egos will go unfed.

We assume this thread to be a zone of sanity in an overheated atmosphere. Thus, a general amnesty is in effect. If posters conduct themselves within the guidlines above, we will be happy to discuss and debate with you. If a poster wishes to apologize for past slips of the tongue, or for possible "over-the-top" statements to another, it will be graciously accepted, and your company welcome.

Please bring a sense of humor; we feel that too many have been taking themselves too seriously lately.

Let the discussion begin!

Signed,

The WPPFF, aka The Wild Turkeys, aka the Coalition of the Sane.

Well, the Speaker of the House, the Majority leader, and the Majority Whip, and the friggin CHAIRMAN OF THE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE, who not only authored the House Version, but floor managed the Senate version, and Congressman Weldon obviously disagree with you goign so far as to submitting a brief to the effect, but Hey they only wrote and passed the bill, so you must know more about it than they do. Amd you can add Santorum to the list that said outright that Whittemore expressly violated the Law.

No what you have is a Judiciary taking the law outside of the Legislative intent, and using a little sleight of hand to do it.

Just because the dissenting Judge lost, does not make the Majority right.

After all, W lost in the Supreme COurt of Florida in 2000.

Was the Majority Decision correct, or was Chief Justice Wells dissent correct?

When the Allies liberated Germany there were no Nazis to be found. All the local farmers claimed they had no idea there had been death camps in their back yards. "I know nothing" was not coined by the character, Shultz, on Hogan's Heroes.

Going further, their point is in considering the bill, it is fairly common sensical that in order to hold a hearing for someone, that someone needs to be alive, and the paradigm of textual analysis of the law, mandates a consideration of the Intent, as well as the Legislative History of said law.

I haven't taken FR seriously for years. I think the message in all this madness is meant for many of you good hearted folks who waste way too much of your time here. I know ... you thought you were doing something ... helping to make a difference. You weren't.

You were hanging out with a bunch of superficial news junkies addicted to this chat board. Now you know that at least half of the regulars on FR are vicious posers ready willing and able to sling hate with the worst of them and on the basis of a single issue ... trash the conservative movement and set back the right to life movement twenty years.

If there was a charge for using FR I suppose I would pony up maybe $10 a year or so like I do for the service Weather Underground provides ($5 per year) for the news. I've never liked or agreed with the 'donation' policy. It's just not the capitalist way. I know many of you really believed in FR. You even give a dollar a day. For what?

Think about the next time you go to a rally. I know I certainly will not be marching again as we did at the Governors mansion back in the Sore Loserman days. Not when I know that half the people I'm marching with are the nastiest most hateful talibanesque people I could have ever met.

I used to sort of grudgingly admit to myself that I was a Republican. I sure wasn't a Rat. I couldn't stomach the Libertarians and their drugs. Now I will NEVER think of myself as a Republican. The GOP sullied itself beyond repair during this fiasco. To cater as they did to the Taliban (who immediately slandered them when they didn't go far enough) and participate in such a disgraceful spectacle .... brands them for the demagogues they are. I have no party ... I have no church ... I see no movement promising enlightenment and freedom in the land today.

Being an Evangelical Protestant who believes that God gives prophecy as a means to PROVE the truth of scripture ... I believe we are indeed in the End Times.

In That Day ... the love of most shall grow cold.

I'm sorry, but you don't seem to get it.

No one here is saying that everyone holds the same opinion. We don't. More then a few people have stated they do NOT agree with feeding tube removal.

I just want CIVIL discussion. Calling people "deathites", "death cultists", "Nazis", "DUers", "lefties", etc., is not civil. I'm not saying you have done any of these things, but these are some of the names that have been flying around.

Everyone is free to have their opinion and free to debate, but hateful names and horrid accusations have got to stop.

The car I'm in right now (BMW M5) is wasted on the traffic-filled roads in and around DC.

I very seldom get out of 4th gear.

Too many people see the 18 inch wheels and just think its a dressed up 5 series. You'd think the 4 exhaust pipes might warn them...but Noooooooo! ;^)

Drive safely.

Personally, I think Terri should have been granted relief - it harmed no one to do so. That's not the way it shook out though, the Schindlers still may have lost.

"I see the point of this thread. It's about a group of folks who believed that starving a person to death was "merciful" and "compassionate", based on hearsay, who claimed to be fed up with the name-calling,...."

That may have been what you saw, but not what, IMO, many others saw...

"The WPPFF is NOT of one mind as to the case of TS or its correct outcome. In fact, wide disagreement exists within our little group. Would you consider the above statement as a possible point to this?

There are many on this thread holding conflicting views on Schiavo.

The difference is that we try hard to discuss it with nobody invoking Godwins Law.

that is really the point. The legislation was not meant to have a specific outcome, other than a new hearing. The Law is clear on that point, made further clear by the Brief submitted by the Congressional Leadership, but some here seem to think that because the judges they generally abhor for activism, arent practicing it here, because they agree with the end result.

Yes, it is unfortunate that when someone today behaves similarly to people in the past, when the collective name of those in the past is used referring to the ones in the present, it starts to get into a schoolyard insult competition. It's too bad that adults can act like children in their bickering.

Perhaps that's part of our human condition. But is it part of human nature? Humanity is what it is, but our nature is not the most overriding cause. We have free will and we have pride and there is an ultimate reality toward which we all converge. If we could keep our sights on our ultimate destiny with knowledge and forsight, our whole manner of interrelationship would be transformed.

If folks are going to decry the viciousness, then BE FAIR ABOUT IT! Don't talk about wanting civil debate and talk about the viciousness on the other side and turn a blind eye to the uncivility on "your" side (that's just a general statement, not saying what "side" you're on).

Now, do you get it?

Again, they originally had language in the bill mandating temporary injunctive relief. This was then changed to allowing for temporary injunctive relief. When that paragraph was stripped from the bill, the result was that existing law governing temporary injunctive relief applied. Frist confirmed this in his comments on the Senate floor.

The bloviating of all the congressmen you care to cite does not change this. The Terri bill did NOT change existing law on temporary injunctive relief. These cowardly congressmen are blaming the judiciary for their own flawed bill. Had they REALLY wanted to mandate temporary injunctive relief, they would have left that language in the bill. Instead, they get credit for "doing something" by passing a bill, and avoid responsibility for its failure by blaming the judiciary for following the law. They can talk about "intent" all they want, but the language of the bill did not require a temporary injunction. The judge ruled based upon the language of the bill and existing law on temporary injunctions.
