DeLay Apologizes for Schiavo Case Rhetoric
AP via Yahoo ^ | April 13, 2005 | Terence Hunt

Posted on 04/13/2005 8:21:32 PM PDT by cyncooper

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay apologized Wednesday for using overheated rhetoric on the day Terri Schiavo died, but refused to say whether he supports impeachment of the judges who ruled in her case.

~snip~

At a crowded news conference in his Capitol office, DeLay addressed remarks he made in the hours after the brain-damaged Florida woman died on March 31. "I said something in an inartful way and I shouldn't have said it that way and I apologize for saying it that way," DeLay told reporters.

~snip~

DeLay seemed at pains to soften, if slightly, his rhetoric of March 31, when Schiavo died despite an extraordinary political and legal effort to save her life.

"I believe in an independent judiciary. I repeat, of course I believe in an independent judiciary," DeLay said.

At the same time, he added, the Constitution gives Congress power to oversee the courts.

"We set up the courts. We can unset the courts. We have the power of the purse," DeLay said.

Asked whether he favors impeachment for any of the judges in the Schiavo case, he did not answer directly.

Instead, he referred reporters to an earlier request he made to the House Judiciary Committee to look into "judicial activism" and Schiavo's case in particular.

MS resources were diverted to paying lawyers after the Schindlers began their assault on him through the courts there is nothing exceptionable about that. Nor can I count on your figures being accurate wrt his home or car being accurate.

FYI, I am very familiar with that area of Florida, and as far as the Mercedes there are pictures of him in it. I guess you would say it was a rental, huh?

Your statement about "assault" well, thats your perogative to believe what you will. You are in the minority dear.

I am always disappointed when a Republican is brow beaten into apologizing for telling the truth, I will never again have quite as much respect for DeLay after this, I will hence forth always visualize him and Lott doing needle point, baking cookies and teasing each other's hair.

I have never heard a Democrat apologize. I guess being a democrat means, "never having to say you are sorry." And why should they, we all know they are sorry.

My sense of humor is in top shape as well as my sense of fairness and right and wrong.

You should wish. Good luck with that.

"Fairness"....... yes, you are fair.

"Sense of humor" ........... forget about it. You have NONE!

Does it matter to any of you all what ramifications that act of civil disobedience by the President of the United States would have created?

If you really believe that, I pity you.

Civil disobedience? For enforcing the Fifth Amendment he swore to uphold? That would be funny if it wasn't so seriously twisted. You've bought into the basic lies about our system that have been propagated by the judicial supremicists.

Would the scene of our President being led away in hand cuffs satisfied the Shiavo supporters? No thanks.

You can't really believe that would have happened, can you? First, he would have to be impeached, by a conservative House of Reprentatives, then convicted by a Republican Senate, then charged with a crime...the crime of overruling a penny-ante GOP RINO judge on an issue of the Constitution of the United States...then convicted by a jury of his peers for the awful act of saving a woman's life. All the pigs on earth would all rise up into the sky simultaneously and soar first.

It wouldn't have saved Terri anyway.

It most certainly would have. A simple order from either the Governor or the President would have saved her immediately. I talked to LE on the scene about this exact issue, I know. They laughed at the silly notion that they might ignore such an order. And the family had a medical team standing by the whole time, ready to spring into action.

Anyone who litigates anything not outlined in my Living Will will forfeit any inheritance or life insurance benefits that would have been due them after I die.

Michael had the legal authority to cease treatment on her behalf without going into court. He should have just told the Schindlers to "lump it".

The fact that he even gave their opinions their day in court when he didn't have to belies all these falsehoods relating to his "intent".
Slander thy name is Schindler.

They have thrown over almost every principle conservatives have touted: limited federal government; opposition to judicial activism; federalism; socialized medicine. And appear to be blissfully unaware of it.

Wrong.

None of those things trump the fundamental God-given right to life, or justify killing an uncharged and unconvicted American citizen by the government.

Your legalistic smokescreen will never cover up this basic fact.

Go on arguing that process is more important than the Bill of Rights, but thinking people aren't listening to it anymore.

Mere lip service is a grave disservice when faced with a question of life and death.

"Since you don't know what de novo means or understand that the Congress has no power to order the courts to do anything..."

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Congress does have the authority, it was vested in them by the Constitution, according to Sen. Santorum, who over the weekend cited the following as giving Congress the power to control the judiciary:
Article. III.
Section. 1.
The judicial Power of the United States, shall be vested in one supreme Court, and in such inferior Courts as the Congress may from time to time ordain and establish.
I'm not letting my family go into the poor house keeping me alive in a PVS. Nor do I want them taking me home, changing me, bathing me, lifting me, feeding me, combing my hair, and giving me balloons to follow around to see if I'm "in there"...I want them to get on with their lives and LIVE.
My living will had better be honored!
Oh, believe me, it will be. Standard operating procedure, totally apart from legalities, is now that if you have a living will, no matter what it says or what you say you want, they tack it to your door and the staff takes that as the sign to offer you as little help as possible. Not every single staffer, but most. Human nature kicking in...
You couldn't get me to sign one for love nor money.
My loved ones know quite well how I feel about murder or self-murder in any of its ugly forms...
Are you over 12 years, old or is there another reason for your less than correct posts?
When the argument that the ends justify the means is advanced, it's no longer a matter of being unaware, it's a matter of not caring, IMO.
I destroyed my living will and replaced it with a medical power of attorney, which is now in the hands of three people I implicitly trust.
Your tagline:
(Remember when conservatives embraced the rule of law?)
My response:
"Remember when Republicans remembered that the Constitution was the basis for the rule of law, and didn't defend lawless judges?"
