Southern heritage buffs vow to use the Virginia gubernatorial election as a platform for designating April as Confederate History and Heritage Month.
The four candidates have differing views on the Confederacy, an issue that has been debated for years in the commonwealth.
"We're not just a few people making a lot of noise," said Brag Bowling, a spokesman for the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the oldest hereditary organization for male descendents of Confederate soldiers. "This is not a racial thing; it is good for Virginia. We're going to keep pushing this until we get it."
Each candidate recently shared his thoughts on what Mr. Bowling called a "litmus test for all politicians." Lt. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine would not support a Confederate History and Heritage Month. Former state Attorney General Jerry W. Kilgore would support something that recognizes everyone who lived during the Civil War.
Sen. H. Russell Potts Jr. and Warrenton Mayor George B. Fitch would support a Confederate History and Heritage Month. Many past Virginia governors honored the Civil War or the Confederacy.
In 1990, former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, the nation's first black governor, a Democrat and a grandson of slaves, issued a proclamation praising both sides of the war and remembering "those who sacrificed in this great struggle."
Former Govs. George Allen and James S. Gilmore III, both Republicans, issued Confederate History Month proclamations. In 2000, Mr. Gilmore replaced that proclamation with one commemorating both sides of the Civil War -- a move that enraged the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Gov. Mark Warner, a Democrat, has refused to issue a gubernatorial decree on either side of the Civil War.
Mr. Kaine, another Democrat, would decline to issue a Confederate History and Heritage Month proclamation if he is elected governor, said his campaign spokeswoman, Delacey Skinner.

cyborg sums it up rather well.
I hope you get kickbacks for hawking that book on FR. Last I checked, Hillary's book was outselling it.
My family is Virginia aristocracy, Scaroborough, arriving here in 1620. One ancestor participated in Bacon's Rebellion and was hanged for treason against the British. Another ancestor, Elinore Gay, was captured by the Beaver Clan of Native Americans and taken to the Ohio Territory, where she gave birth to several children. General Armstrong, a relative, fought beside Robert E. Lee. Living in Texas as a young child, my family shared with African American neighbors. The babysat for us, gave us sweet potato pie as a treat; we played with their children. The South has a proud history. Let's celebrate.
A vote for April.
Yes they do, and I was not referring to the 16th Century "Enlightenment" but the American experience. After the Revolution and the "self-evident" principles that served as it's basis, many Americans took their first look at slavery and saw something they did not like and wished to be rid of. That included slave owners such as Washington, Jefferson and Madison. In the years after the Revolution, many men, North and South, worked together to find a solution to the problem with the Northern states where slavery was not a major economic engine ending the practice. Even in the early 1830s, Virginia, which had the largest slave population, came within a handful of votes in their legislature of ending slavery. Many slaveowners voluntarily freed their slaves considering the practice not only sinful, but contrary to the American idea.
The 1830s also saw a major religious revival in the United States, and revival Churches, both North and South, preached against the evils of slavery. That revival, however, ran head long into what had become the wealthiest industry in the country -- the cultivation of upland cotton which required ever more slaves. The wealth generated by the cotton crop subverted what had been a tide against slavery into a search for rationals to justify it on religious and moral grounds. Churches literally split in two over the reinterpretation of Biblical texts justifying slavery on racial grounds. Think of what the Episcopal Church in the US is going through today over the issue of gay ministers. Both sides use the same Biblical texts to justify their positions. Only one can be correct.
Correct.
I'm still lot though, as to why you thought I was arguing for slavery? (Or any POV that you have asserted thus far)
That's not what I meant. I was arguing that the Bible was abused to support slavery.
1.admitted what HATE-filled, arrogant HYPOCRYTES the lincoln regime thugs demonstrably were,
2.admitted that the damnyankee army was:
a.throughly RACIST to the bone,
b.ANTI-SEMETIC,
c. ANTI-Roman Catholic &
d. ANTI-AmerIndian
3.admitted that the lincoln thugs MURDERED TENS of THOUSANDS of UNarmed civilians & helpless POWs in cold-blood,
4. stopped denying the DEMONSTRABLY TRUE facts about ETHNIC CLEANSING in dixie by the civilian/military elites of the north and

i'll stay around (if nothing else) to point out what LIARS, FOOLS, MORONS & HYPOCRYTES you DAMNyankees of the unionist coven demonstrably ARE.

All the things you listed about the union army are true. I don't see why people must agree that with you. It's in the books. Anyway, I'm off to find a job :-)

You got me. But I can show you all sorts of examples of people doing heinous things and cloaking their actions in the Bible. The Inquisition, the Crusades, assorted pogroms, and the Wars of the Reformation come immediately to mind.

I'm a Chicago Democrat, Charlie, and I think that it is a great idea!
last year on Confederate Memorial Day, a LARGE group of LOUDMOUTHED, STUPID, arrogant, HATERS showed up at the cemetery to:
CURSE,
hurl stones/garbage at the participants,
SCREAM obscenities on "bullhorns",
beat drums,
blow horns on cars (even during the PRAYERS & HYMNS!)&
generally make themselves look STUPID, HATEFUL, IGNORANT & ANTI-religious.
such events (SADLY) are becoming MORE COMMON every year at Confederate Memorial Events.
the LEFTIST, MEAN-spirited, ANTI-Semetic, RACIST, damnyankee REVISIONISTS & RADICAL/PINKO groups like the so-called "Southern Poverty Law Center" & naaLcp "leadership" are behind such acts & ENCOURAGE the NAIVE, IGNORANT & "terminally DUMB" to evermore DISrespectful conduct.
fwiw, SOME FReepers SUPPORTED the "demonstrators" actions at the cemetery. one said, "you got what you deserved".

My friend, I wish I could have been there. Most folks are good people by the 'man bites dog' nature of news gives the assh*les too much face time.
The ignorant serve cruel masters. I have seen similar such demonstrations. I have visited Dixie many times and hve never experienced anything but kindness and welcome. God Bless the South!
How nice to hear from a fellow 17th century arrival! My father's family on his paternal side were here in the Jamestown settlement. They were laterally related to the family of Captain John Smith. The good Captain had no children himself, as you no doubt know.
My father's mother's family were Scots, who arrived in the early 1700's, settling near Fayetteville, N.C., where my father was born in 1881.
Even though he had made his way to Baltimore, MD by the time I was born, he always called N.C. "home."
You are right. The South has a very proud history. I consider myself southern, even though I'm now in California, but spent most of my life after college in the Boston area, where I never felt like a New Englander.
My heart is in the South.
Thanks for your story. Very interesting; - and very much a part of "Americana" lore!
Char
BUT, you are correct, as they get the "face-time" AND are the MOST noticeable.
otoh, they WILL eventually SPLIT this country North & South.
even a cottontail rabbit will FIGHT when backed into a corner. that is what they are doing to the southland's Patriots!
