MIAMI (AP) — Don Carter, the bowling great with the unorthodox style who flourished as a genuine sports celebrity during the game's golden age on TV, has died. He was 85. Carter died at his home in Miami on Thursday night, the Professional Bowlers Association said Friday. He recently was hospitalized with pneumonia complicated by emphysema. Carter, known as "Mr. Bowling," was the game's original superstar. He became his sport's most recognizable name at a time when alleys were thriving across the country and bowling was starting to assert itself as a fixture on television. Carter was a leading force...

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin may or may not be a viable 2012 presidential candidate, but the bowling industry is probably hoping she is at least a better bowler than President Obama. Palin will be giving the keynote address at the International Bowl Expo 2010 in June of next year, the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA) announced today. Dubbed the bowling industry's "premier international convention," the expo will take place between June 27 and July 1 at the Las Vegas Hilton and Las Vegas Convention Center. Palin's keynote speech is slated for the morning of June 30. The BPAA...

It's a peril that only a crack team of health and safety experts could have uncovered. After two years and £250,000, they found that ten-pin bowling alleys up and down the country could be a 'very dangerous' environment for families. They concluded that it was too easy for children or teenagers to run down lanes and get trapped in machinery that sets up the pins - even though there was no record of any such accident having happened. The bizarre Health and Safety Executive report found that members of the public would be at risk if they walked along the...

What do you get the sports fan who wants to bowl 300 without practicing? Try the RC900, a remote-control bowling ball invented by San Antonio, Texas-based 900 Global. The bowler steers the ball by adjusting the position of a weight screwed onto a threaded shaft inside the ball. The product is being marketed to young children and those unable to bowl because of physical limitations. The ball itself is surprisingly nimble, as evidenced by a user-submitted video (see below) in which one of them slaloms smoothly around four chairs set up along the lane before striking the headpin. While the economy is in a Obama-meltdown, our new President finds time to work on his bowling form. For folks that may be unemployed or losing their homes it must be re-assuring that his game has improved.

In his history-making appearance on the Tonight Show, President Barack Obama stunned the nation with his offhand crack “I bowl like one of those retards in the Special Olympics.” During last Fall’s presidential race, Obama inspired titters by scoring a 37 in a bowling match in Pennsylvania. He says, though, that he’s been practicing in the White House alley and has recently scored as high as 129 in a single game. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs asked that Americans “show some class by not mocking the President’s lack of skills or his choice of words in describing them. The President has...

It was all going so well as the President chatted to Jay Leno. Then he made a crack about the Special Olympics ... It was billed as the first time that a sitting President of the United States had appeared as a guest on a late-night talk show. After Barack Obama’s performance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, there’s also a good chance that it was the last. Granted, the President, as always, was charming. Granted, he lit up the studio with that Hollywood-grade smile. Yes, he explained the AIG crisis in clear, measured terms, and wisely backed away...

Reporting from Chicago -- When she met Barack Obama two years ago, Caitlin Cox proudly wore the two bronze medals she had won at the Special Olympics. The then-Illinois senator grinned as she showed him pictures of her signature bubble-gum-pink bowling ball and posed for photographs with her. Cox, who has Down syndrome, excitedly recalls that meeting each time she sees Obama's photo on a magazine cover or hears him mentioned on TV. Her ears perked up again Friday morning as her parents discussed the president at breakfast. Her mother, Suzanne Thompson, told her that Obama had made a joke...

President Obama joked Thursday that his bowling ability was suitable for the Special Olympics, a comment for which he later apologized. But one Special Olympics bowler has a few tips for the president on how to improve his score. Tim Maloney, a 38-year-old with Down Syndrome who has been bowling for 30 years, said the president needs to practice more if he wants to bring his recent score of 129 anywhere close to Maloney's average of 165. "Focus, take his time, and relax" where the simple-but-effective tips Maloney offered the president in a phone interview Friday with FOXNews.com from...

In case you haven’t see it yet, President Obama channeled Joe Biden last night and said something offensive and stupid on the Tonight Show. [VIDEO] Seems Obama went bowling while on the campaign trail last summer and embarrassed himself by rolling a 37. He explained to Jay Leno that he’s been practicing on the White House bowling alley, but said his lack of success is “like Special Olympics or something.” [VIDEO] Next we have MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann. He had seen an early NBC feed of the Tonight Show and was horribly dismayed by Obama’s remark. Not because it was offensive,...

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - The top bowler for the Special Olympics looks forward to meeting President Barack Obama in an alley. "He bowled a 129. I bowl a 300. I could beat that score easily," Michigan's Kolan McConiughey (KO-lahn Mc-KAHNA-he) told The Associated Press in an interview Friday.

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Police said a dispute over bowling etiquette led one man to assault another with a 16-pound ball, knocking out one of the man's teeth. They said a 24-year-old man hit a man in the face with the bowling ball during a melee involving six bowlers at the Rocklin AMF Lanes. Two groups got into a fist fight about 12:40 a.m. Thursday after two bowlers approached the lane at the same time. They couldn't agree which should go first.

His controversial joke hadn't even aired yet when President Obama got on the phone from Air Force One Thursday night to apologize for comparing his notoriously bad bowling skills to the Special Olympics. "He expressed his disappointment and he apologized, I think in a way that was very moving," Tim Shriver, the chairman of the Special Olympics board, told "Good Morning America" today. "He expressed that he did not intend to humiliate this population, certainly didn't want to embarrass or give anybody any more reason for pain or just suffering I would say," said Shriver, who received the call from...

The first appearance by a sitting president on "The Tonight Show" may well end up being the last. President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno Thursday afternoon, attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled. Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he's gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley. He bowled a 129, the president said. "That's very good, Mr. President," Leno said sarcastically. It's "like the Special Olympics or something," the president said. When asked about the remark,...

FLORENCE — Bowling a 300 game is a once in a lifetime dream. But for Penrose resident Ector Rodriguez, he managed to bowl two 300 games in about a month at Fremont Lanes. “In order to get recognition for a 300 game, you have to do it on a sanctioned league,” said Rodriguez, who is a member of Fremont Lanes team. On Jan. 14, he bowled a 300 game then repeated it Feb. 15. Rodriguez said he threw the ball along the center board and managed to make strikes throughout the game. Then in the 12th game, “I missed my...

On the golf course Monday, a woman waiting at the 18th green reminded Obama of his disastrous bowling during the presidential campaign. It was an unwelcome reminder for Obama, whose golf game during a 12-day vacation has been just as troublesome. "That was pretty good, right?" Obama said to cheers as he finished a round of golf near his $9 million rented vacation home near Honolulu. The woman sitting on a nearby wall shouted, "Better than your bowling."

Acccording to the United States Bowling Congress (USBC), the bowling industry has offered to help President-Elect Obama "strike" change at the White House lane. As the soon-to-be 44th President of the United States of America, Barack Obama has promised to bring change to Capitol Hill and the nation – from taxation and healthcare reform to the potential replacement of the White House bowling lane with a basketball court! Fortunately, to the delight of the bowling industry and the more than 67.2 million bowlers throughout the nation, the president-elect flexed his diplomatic skills by deciding to add basketball hoops while still...

WATCH THE VIDEO ON YOUTUBE....WHAT A PANSY NOTE: The real score was 37. This is not the real score sheet, but rather, a representation of what the score sheet would have looked like. Even little tiny Bantam League girls do better than this. Oh, yeah, he has Ahmadinnerjacket and the rest of our enemies really trembling, huh? Unless he is blind and physically disabled, how is it possible for a grown man to bowl 37?

DES MOINES, Iowa -- A blind Iowa man scored a perfect 300 game at the Century Lanes bowling alley on Saturday, The Storm Lake Times reported. The Times said Dale Davis, 78, of Alta, called the game "quite a thrill." He rolled 12 back-to-back strikes, the first-ever perfect game at the Century Lanes, The Times reported. Each year nearly 70 million Americans hit the lanes, making bowling the most popular participatory sport in the U.S. But for serious players with the latest equipment, it's a whole new game Bowling has come a long way since Edward III of England banned the sport in 1366 because it was distracting his soldiers from archery practice. Bowling dates back at least to the Pharaohs, although for the first few thousand years, the game remained pretty much unchanged. You rolled a ball made of stone or wood or rubber at a bunch of pins and hoped for the best. Over...

16 states now recognize bowling as a varsity sport, a fourfold increase since 1999. Beyond becoming more accessible, bowling is growing more acceptable - even cool...... It's practice time, and the high school students vying for a spot on the varsity squad aren't at the gym. The action is down at the Bowl-O-Rama. The boys and girls from Twin Valley High School in southeastern Pennsylvania set up at their usual lanes, surrounded by teams from rival schools. This is a family bowling center, but the students have taken it over, scattering the pins in a series of loud, clattering crashes....

My name is Bob. Let me relate how I handled the situation with my wife, Peacebaby. When I took "early retirement" last year, it became necessary for Peacebaby to get a full-time job, both for extra income and for the health benefits that we needed. Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts...

ESPN gets less sports-centered Cabler to broaden its field with more series, telepix By JOHN DEMPSEY Less hockey and baseball. More original movies and series.
