School Shooting injures one person,
Hostage situation may be developing.
Update: Multiple Shooting Victims and Possible Hostages in Lancaster County
Not many details available yet, but an incident has been reported from Mine Rd. in Bart Township in Lancaster County involving multiple gunshot victims. Dennis Buterbaugh reports live from our newsroom. abc27 has a news crew on the way. We will update with details as they become available.

NICKEL MINES, Pa. — At least two female students and one slightly older female — who may have been a teacher's aide — were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.
State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.
"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.
Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.
"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.
After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims — some critically wounded — were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.

I've been thinking a lot about this lately. I really believe the kids need a pass word. Something like let's roll. They hear it and they know to run and hide if they can and if not to take the bad guy out as a group. Yeah sadly some may die but the pattern has been that they will anyway. Do you know of any that have not harmed or killed once they put their plan in action?
On that note, I'd have to agree. I think we as a society need to change the way we're taught to deal with these situations. But if the most effective way of dealing with it required that we renounce our most sacred beliefs, most of us would reject those methods. I have no problem meeting violence with violence, but then, I don't believe that's a sin. The Amish do. They're not going to change that. They gradually accept changes, but that's just too much to ask.
Judging from that photo upthread...of all the Amish men surrounding the boys who escaped...we do not have to blame them. They are blaming themselves already...for something no one could ever have foreseen or prevented.
Every man in the photo is hanging his head.
God be with them. They are strong folks, but who among us has the strength to bear something like this?
That is their choice but life will not be the same. They will change some stuff.
How can you help the little children by staying and being killed in front of them?
There aren't any easy right answers in a hostage situation, because you never know if the hostage-taker is just looking for attention, wants the kids for leverage, or walked in the door fully intending to kill everyone.
If the adults stay, and act all tough and macho, then the kids get to watch them splattered. If they go, they can tell the police how many people are inside, what the gunman is carrying, where he's standing, which doors are locked and unlocked, what the gunman can and can't see from inside, whether the gunman is someone they recognize, and so on.
If a crazy points a gun at my head and says "Go," I'm gone. I hope I can help from outside, but I'm for g-d sure I can't help if I'm dead. And if an online armchair quarterback questions my call, trust me, that will be about #385 on the list of things keeping me awake at night.
God, I hope they do not blame themselves.
"Let's roll." That's so simple, but I think it might work. Two little words, that bring to mind the actions of the passengers of Flight 93. I think it just might make it clear to everyone, in a split second, what must be done.
Exactly what I've been thinking. Look for the chosen class leader to give the word and act. It wouldn't take much training.

They don't have to arm but they can teach the kids to run. They will probably change things where it will be much harder to reach their kids. If they as a group aren't able arm , there are other things they can do.
It's harvest time. They were all out in the fields surrounding the school. They must be thinking...Why didn't I hear? Why didn't I go?
It is agonizing.
I think I must leave the thread now to sit down and cry and mourn these young lives and pray for the mothers and fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers, the entire community.
I've always told my kids that they should GET OUT BY ANY MEANS if something would happen at school. Even jumping out a 2 story window and breaking something is better than dead.
