Update: Multiple Shooting Victims and Possible Hostages in Lancaster County

Not many details available yet, but an incident has been reported from Mine Rd. in Bart Township in Lancaster County involving multiple gunshot victims. Dennis Buterbaugh reports live from our newsroom. abc27 has a news crew on the way. We will update with details as they become available.

Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting

NICKEL MINES, Pa. — At least two female students and one slightly older female — who may have been a teacher's aide — were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.

State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.

"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.

Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.

"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.

After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims — some critically wounded — were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.

Yep, I've never been aware of the Amish not owning their own land...there's much that is communal like the schools and the church itself, but a family runs its own farm and splits it up among the sons when the father passes (of course, when you have 5 sons, eventually everbody has a postage stamp and that's when 4 of the sons take off to Indiana.)

And income is income - the IRS isn't going to stop taxing farm income just because the farm is owned by a church - they're going to track that down.

The Amish own their own places. They take turns in hosting the church service in their houses but the there is no tax exemption.

They do not pay ss tax nor do they particpate in the ss system for they do not belive it is right to have insurance.

Uh, Huh? It's not the young people doing it here, it's crazy old coots. These boomer aged men who are probably having bad flashbacks from old acid trips or something. Who knows, but I'll say that our young people need armed teachers more than they need Jesus.

joanie-f, thank you for your beautiful post. What an eloquent post on the Amish community and the tragedy they are dealing with.

Thank you also for reaffirming my faith in this site...I was trying to keep up with the developments at work, and I wanted to post (couldn't remember my password to log on elsewhwere) and was just so taken aback by the horror of what happened (incomprehensible, I can't fathom what occurred in that school house) and by the posts of some of the keyboard commandos here. Thank you (and the mods) for representing the thoughts and prayers of so many.

I have had the joy of working with members of the Amish community (years ago). They are such a steadfast reminder of what is great about our country. Their faith in God; their loyality to their families and community; their work ethic. I can only imagine how their community will help the families affected; no grief counselors. They will take care of their own.

Prayers sent out. My heart just breaks...

It was committed by someone outside of the Amish Community. I get your logic, but since this guy isn't Amish, he's watching the tube or listening to the Nutty Newscasters.

The main teacher ran for the nearest phone. Yes, in hindsight, one of the teachers with an infant could have ran for the phone and the main teacher could have tried to attack the guy, but given the split-second they had to figure out what to do

These are ANABAPTISTS for Pete's sake. They will lift a hand to no one. It isn't in their ken to do so. Remember though, they believe that this world is a preparation for a better one...they take a longer view than most English.

You guys are sounding as nutty as a Pecan Tree in an Almond Grove. So, is it your opinions that the anti-gun whackos are all standing by waiting to crack just before election time? Can someone come up with a timeline of all the school shootings that have happened in the past, say, ten years to correlate this absurd premise?

LaPierre, IMO, is a kook if he is making any connection between these events and the fact that they may be tied to any legislation or upcoming election.

Ah, finally someone gets it right. Every time some incident makes the news involving Amish it never fails to amuse me how wrong most people get it.

Yes, Amish pay all Federal, State and local taxes just like anyone else. They do not participate in the Social Security program but they also do not receive any benefits.

My biggest tip to anyone thinking about Amish is: they are people the same as you and I. They have a different lifestyle and different values but they have the same faults and bad characters as the rest of society. They are not perfect people just because they have a rather spartan and austere way of living.

There are groups of conservative/traditional people who think they can insulate themselves from the secular world, and save themselves and their families from the bad influences. While I admire their efforts, as long as human nature is weak, there will be sin. If such people are Christian, I think they run the risk of ignoring Our Lord's commission to spread the Gospel to the four corners of the earth.

The Amish and Mennonite plain people know a lot about sin and pain. I remember well the Plain Dress Mennonite woman who stayed with me a week. Her face was a criss cross of the scars she bore after an attack on the African mission she helped found.

Thank you for checking into this EBH. I would gladly donate to help defray their medical costs. I can't afford much, but would like to do to what I can.

This has affected me (and so, so many others on this forum) very deeply and I would like to something, anything, to help.

Please ping me to the info when it becomes available if you could.

Prayers all around for the victims and their families. Sleep will not come easily tonight, but the tears sure will.

"The man that did this today was not the Charlie I've beenmarried to for almost 10 years. My husband was loving, supportive and thoughtful -- all the things you'd always want and more. He was an exceptional father. He took the kids to soccer practice and games, played ball in the backyard and took our 7-year-old daughter shopping. He never said no when I asked him to change a diaper. Our hearts are broken, our lives shattered and we grieve for the innocent lives that were lost today. Above all, please pray. Pray for the families who lost children today. Please pray to for our family and children."

This man shattered his own family and the families of all those who were in the schoolhoues, killed or not.

God be with them all.

Ok guys, I answered my own question. Here is a briefing of school shootings over the past ten years. I honestly don't see anything that would cause me to believe that it has anything to do with anti gun legislation or elections. Let's not start sounding like the looney left here OK?
