Hostage situation may be developing.

Update: Multiple Shooting Victims and Possible Hostages in Lancaster County

Not many details available yet, but an incident has been reported from Mine Rd. in Bart Township in Lancaster County involving multiple gunshot victims. Dennis Buterbaugh reports live from our newsroom. abc27 has a news crew on the way. We will update with details as they become available.

Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting

NICKEL MINES, Pa. — At least two female students and one slightly older female — who may have been a teacher's aide — were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.

State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.

"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.

Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.

"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.

After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims — some critically wounded — were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.

If info becomes available, please give me a ping.

If I see it, I will do so.

My post was just based upon my own past experience. I remember one of the elders actually making a statement to the press, which was so out of the norm, thanking Delawareasns for the outpouring of assistance to the family.

The damage of that crash was horrendous, the girl that was able to make it to somewhere to get help had a broken arm and/or dislocated collar bone. The young man now in a wheel chair also needed to have much of his face reconstructed. He had been taken to Johns Hopkins the distance was a tremendous strain on the family because none drove. They never had a problem getting a ride to Baltimore.

I have no doubt the "English" community in Lancaster County will do anything less to help these families.

Your list of school shootings makes shocking and sobering reading.

I am surprised no one told us to use the donation online and the designation section?

"The Amish give me the creeps"

In such a tragic event as this, a group that has most likely never harmed you, in any way, shape or form, they give you the creeps? It seems, to me, some mental counseling would be of benefit to you.

..."but have they determined that the shooter was a student?"

Um, let's see, counting lines, starting with the headline, on line 23 it states that the shooter was a truck driver, and within 192 posts you have not figured that out? It also seems to me, some reading and comprehension skills would be of benefit to you.

Yikes!

Only a coward would pick an Amish School for girls, knowing there are no phones and that they would not fight back. Ba$tard is in hell with all the muslim terrorists.

These are ANABAPTISTS for Pete's sake. They will lift a hand to no one. It isn't in their ken to do so.

I just got home from working a long day outdoors [no TV, no radio, no nothing], so this is the first I've heard of the story.

And I sure don't have time to go back and read all 1500+ posts on this thread.

But are you telling me that while these "Anabaptists" believe that it is immoral to defend themselves in a situation like this, they also believe that it is perfectly acceptable to call the police to come and offer to do the defending that they themselves are not willing to do?

From a morality point of view, that sounds absolutely bizarre ["I refuse to defend myself, but I expect you to give your life in defense of mine"?!?].

Please forgive me if I misunderstood what you were saying.

Yes but it no way makes a correlation between school shootings and anti gun legislation or elections, which some on this thread have proposed.

Have you done a Google map plot of the locations of these shootings and link them by date order? I wonder if the FBI has? Certainly there is a thread of evil, but is there another common thread?

I'm not read up on the Amish folks, and grew up with similar background(32 years ago); most likely that is not the case. I'll have to double check on that, however.

Coward just begins to describe him... I'm surprised the news media hasn't called this what it is... if there is such thing as a 'hate crime' (a term I don't employ often) this is it. I say that for this reason... if this man had a grudge for an offense... wouldn't he seek his revenge against the one who offended him? This is different... this wasn't revenge... it was an attack on the Amish sub-culture. It is unfortunate they give this guy the legitimacy by calling his act one of revenge... you can't take revenge on those who have not offended you. These Amish girls were totally innocent, they became victims simply because of the religion of thier parents... it was a crime of bigotry and hate against a specific group of people, not revenge.

They do...its called 'rumaspring' (or something close to that) and the teens get to experience the 'english' life and decide if they want to follow their faith or live in the english world.

What causes school shootings? I feel their are a number of factors, all of which the MSM and Society in general fail to recognize. The primary factory being the lack of teaching proper respect of the weapon by the parents. Second would be the failure of the parents to secure the weapons properly when they are not able to supervise their child. Third would be a breakdown in the school system which tolerates improper behaviour by children and doesn't adequately respond to such behaviour. The final might be the coup de gras of the whole scenario. If proper behaviour was stressed in the school system, then those children that act improperly would have some kind of peer pressure exerted upon them, or their peers would (acting properly) rat them out. I know this works because there have been several cases in the past few years where this kind of peer monitoring has been successful. It has, in the case of the law enforcement agencies involved, averted possible disaster aking to Columbine.

Our society has become so disattached that we fail to realize the value of community. Know your neighbor. Become friends with them. And if they are not friendly, watch them that much more closely. I am not saying to be a snoop, but be wary of the unsociable because they have proven to be culprits in many crimes.

What kind of man expects innocent women and children to defend themselves... religiously pacifist or otherwise? I believe it was the pleasure of those brave PA state troopers to risk thier lives defending these innocent women and children. And I thank God for a country that defends those who out of conscience could not kill to preserve their own life.

Are you saying they have no moral right to ask an outsider, ie the police, to come in and stop the killing of their children done by an outsider? How heartless!!

Perhaps they were allowing law enforcement the opportunity to remove the uninvited murdering dirt bag from their school so that they could pick up the pieces of their families.

It has been suggested by the moderators that this thread be used to post updates, prayers and well wishes for the survivors.

Maybe you could spend some more time reading more of the posts and learn all that happened and how this was not an amish problem, but a horrific tragedy.

Prayers for all of those hurt by this senseless evil.

I think the Amish people can pull together through the pain and they may actually help us a little rather than the other way around.

The hunanistic world has its "grief counselors" etc. but God's love as poured out through human beings is a much more powerful force.

"Loving God and loving your neighbor as yourself" has power when and where it is practiced.

I'm optimistic for the future of the Amish and hope the rest of us will pick up something along the way.

I'm not a legalistic pacifist so I'm not praising all about Anabaptists, but there is something for us to consider in how they respond to all of this.

There is no aparent "thread" geographically. There is a sharp increase in the number of incidents from late 1999 to the Spring of 2001 though. An occurance during this timeframe happened almost once a month, if not twice. Now, I realize that this sounds quite omminous, but the school shootings have tappered off quite dramatically since conservatism has again gained popularity. This, I have noticed, is the only "thread" I can see.

The shock of 9-11 may have slowed it down for a few years after 2001.
