Update: Multiple Shooting Victims and Possible Hostages in Lancaster County

Not many details available yet, but an incident has been reported from Mine Rd. in Bart Township in Lancaster County involving multiple gunshot victims. Dennis Buterbaugh reports live from our newsroom. abc27 has a news crew on the way. We will update with details as they become available.

Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting

NICKEL MINES, Pa. — At least two female students and one slightly older female — who may have been a teacher's aide — were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.

State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.

"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.

Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.

"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.

After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims — some critically wounded — were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.

Bet the rates are very much the same ~ the causes are physical/chemical and not spiritual.

The causes are not always physical/chemical. If they were, psychologists would be out of business.

Their peaceful ways? Their faith in God? The fact that they mind their own business and don't bother their neighbors? They dress funny? I can't think of a single thing about the Amish that is not admirable.

Compared to the other religion that dresses funny...I'll take the Amish. I respect the Amish. And if a tragedy like this has befallen them, I pray for them. But, somehow I think they will be the most capable of getting through this.

Why why why do wisecracks like that appear on such horrific events? Note: One is NOT required to post anything

Easy now. It's called gallows humor and NR's sardonic comment was entirely appropriate, considering that the MSM generally tries to blame these things on all kinds of influences. I was just scrolling through to see if anyone had said it, 'cause if they hadn't, I was gonna.

I'm dreading the day a National news story happens in Bowie, Maryland, and I have to sit through a dozen national news anchors say "Bow-ie" instead of "Boo-ie" a thousand times.

There is nothing humorous here. Children have died.

Tacky behavior on this thread will be noticed by the moderators.

YOU DON'T WANT THAT!

Prediction: the shooter was a local nutjob who had some failed dealings with some Amish people, and blamed the entire community for imagined wrongs.

The insular nature of the Amish community lends itself to such irrational, collectivized hatred, much like the hatred directed against the Jews.

Actually the Amish moving en masse to a community ends up being a financial windfall for that community - they pay their taxes, but run all their schools privately, so you don't have to expand the schools, and they make basically no use of the local social services whatsoever.

A special place in Hell is reserved for those who target and kill defenseless women and children.

"All I can say is that the Amish I know are the finest, kindest, humble, honest, and caring people that I have ever met."

Big ditto to that, 1. I'm just next door in York Cty, and have met many over the years.

I so admire the discipline.

I don't know why they feel their children don't need an education past the 8th grade? I can only speculate..

Regarding Lancaster and churches, I believe it still has more churches per intersection than any city in America outside of Indianapolis, which was always supposedly #2 in that regard.

You are correct that there's every degree of Plain Church group in Lancaster county ~ and if you were a necktie salesman, you'd find somewhere else to set up shop.

Mechanization and automation installed throughout the postal service pretty much banished neckties ~ too dangerous ~ but I remember the day when Lancaster post office was the ONLY one in America where no one ever wore a tie ~ best way to get comfortable at a meeting with those guys was to take off your tie.
