Update: Multiple Shooting Victims and Possible Hostages in Lancaster County

Not many details available yet, but an incident has been reported from Mine Rd. in Bart Township in Lancaster County involving multiple gunshot victims. Dennis Buterbaugh reports live from our newsroom. abc27 has a news crew on the way. We will update with details as they become available.

Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting

NICKEL MINES, Pa. — At least two female students and one slightly older female — who may have been a teacher's aide — were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.

State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.

"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.

Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.

"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.

After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims — some critically wounded — were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.

This happened in Nickel Mines? Dang, that is a very out-of-the way backwater section of Lancaster County - and absolutely gorgeous farm country. I used to drive nearby there on Rt 896 on a long commute - Bart Township is very untouristy, unlike Strasburg or Paradise to the NW. I used to see the kids walking or riding their scooters alongside the road to school - probably might have been that one. Damn, this is horrible.

Prediction: the shooter was a local nutjob who had some failed dealings with some Amish people, and blamed the entire community for imagined wrongs.

Agreed.

Just looking at those adorable little ones sitting there is so heartbreaking!!

"Earlier, Chris Jansing said there were 27 students in the school."

OT: Is that Chris Kapostachy (sp?) from Albany, NY? What network is she reporting for? She was hugely popular locally. She got married and left the area. I lost track of her.

Actually I envy their simple lifestyle.

So true. I visited the Amish Country as a kid when I lived in Pennsylvania. I thought the area has some of the most beautiful farmland I've ever seen. Their way has a certain zen quality. You see life lived without office angst, cell phones, DVD's, filing cabinets, and all the other brikabrak we sometimes get overly concerned with.

Our family rents a house to an Amish family and have owned a big farm in Amish country for 20+ years. They are truly wonderful people. My dad has had the Amish build two houses for him with great results. These are people who keep to themselves, want to be left alone yet are friendly, live an honest life, believe in God and would do anything for family and friends. And don't get me started on their homemade sweets! I can see why that would give you the creeps.

Prayers for the victims and the poor children that ran off into the fields to escape.

Could be that, or could be someone who wanted his 15 minutes of fame, and decided the best way to do it would be to shoot up an Amish school.

It's the media that fuels this stuff. If they did not give it such prominent coverage, these incidents would almost be non-existent.

CNN is saying that some boys were ordered out of the school by the Perp. Officers/firemen may be looking for some of those who could be injured.

Found something of interest on CNN feed -- Officer taking pictures of some object found in a grassy area.

I don't know why they feel their children don't need an education past the 8th grade? I can only speculate..

I believe that the Amish feel it would make one too prideful.

Unfortunately, you may be correct. I've seen it happen in Southwestern Wisconsin where Amish farmers are able to make a living on farms that had previously failed. Some of the locals feel that the Amish must be ripping them off since they are successful on land that others couldn't live off of.
