Update: Multiple Shooting Victims and Possible Hostages in Lancaster County

Not many details available yet, but an incident has been reported from Mine Rd. in Bart Township in Lancaster County involving multiple gunshot victims. Dennis Buterbaugh reports live from our newsroom. abc27 has a news crew on the way. We will update with details as they become available.

Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting

NICKEL MINES, Pa. — At least two female students and one slightly older female — who may have been a teacher's aide — were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.

State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.

"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.

Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.

"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.

After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims — some critically wounded — were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.

Excuse me, I don't want to get too involved in this argument. But you do say you don't blame, then you say how can you not blame ... Emotions are heightened right now. I understand your feeling of protectiveness towards the children and your sense of adult responsibility. We do not know the full story and we were not there. Believe me, how I wish this horror had not happened today.

I don't think there is any debate about their instincts to protect. It is just at the scene the teachers apparently the best way to protect them was to follow instructions and seek help for them once outside. I don't disagree with their decision (though I don't really think it is even fair to call it a "decision").

Jim, I am waiting for a call from my cousin. She often stays for weeks at the home of one of the families that sends kids to this school. I know one of them is a girl child.

I'll let you know when I get home from school, but I am really afraid.

I noticed one of the posters here mentioned that they often have locals drive them to places since they do not own cars. Fran, (my cousin) is always driving them around when she visits.

Usually there is one female teacher in an Amish school house.

I'm curious - since the Amish only go to school until 8th grade, what are the credentials of the teacher? I've seen pics of Amish in school with non-Amish, so I never thought about Amish-only schools and who would teach.

It's just reacting from a terrible story. Calm down.

There have been too many uninformed attacks on the police and the teacher on this thread. Gawd, the poor woman is probably completely destroyed by this, and all a few folks can do is question her actions when told to leave by a gunman? Cripes.

I think you are just making too many assumptions here about the women in that community and casting the teacher in a very unfair light.

We all want to think when we hear about things like this that somehow it could been prevented. The idea that a person who is determined to murder innocents and does not fear death can attack successfully is quite chilling. But from what has been released so far it doesn't appear that anyone could have stop this slaughter except the killer himself.

Every situation is different. But I don't see the harm in having dialogue about what one might do if caught in a future situation.

I was addressing TXBubba's question as to why she may have not stayed.....not making a statement or judgement against the poor teacher. Only God knows what happened there....

I haven't and I'm really getting tired of being accused of doing so.

You are doing just that - you are being critical of the teacher for leaving when ordered to do so by a gunman. Give it a rest.

Why can't a few people just say NOTHING rather than harping on stuff while the story unfolds?

Because I can't get the picture of little girls left by their teacher to be tied up and shot execution style out of my head.

The time for 2A activism, and defense of the plain language and philosophy as enumerated in the BOR is always IMHO...and that can be done without disrespecting these fine people or their beliefs.

Having said that, see my post 927. I do understand and respect the Amish beliefs...my comments were more out of frsutration at the whole situation than anything lse...and the constant spinning and PC gibberish from the left, many politicians of all stripes and the media and their "experts".

The answer, 200+ years ago, and today, is for the common citizen to be armed and to be the first line of defense against such instances as they go down.

Just my opinion, and, once again, absolutley not meaning or construing any disrespect to the Amish or their very serious and sincere CHristian faith.

God bless them...and God rest those who were slain by this animal, and comfort their friends, families, relatives and neighbors.

I believe unless any of us have had a gun to our heads, we have no idea how we would react. Most of us would instinctually do whatever the gunman dictated. It's nice to think we would do differently, but I bet the majority of us would FLEE as fast as our feet could take us if told to leave.

seems like there was time to counterattack - had the means been on hand. where did he get the 2x4s from, or did he lug them in when he arrived? did he have them in his car? didn;t he have to set his gun down to nail them in place?

did he tie the grils up first or later on?

Bonfire, I understand what you are saying, but the teacher did what she probably thought was right - get to a phone and get some help.

The gunman had been in that school for about 45 minutes before the teacher could get out. He walked in with a handgun in his palm. He brought 2x4's and 2x6's with him, as well as either wire ties or flexcuffs. The teacher didn't just run and keep on going - she called for help.

I am also tired of reading the perps died of a self inflicted gunshot wounds.

I for one would like to read they died of a police-inflicted shot to the head after suffering non-fatal gunshot wounds to the groin area. You know, the kind that Zed suffered in Pulp Fiction.
