The Buzz About a McCain-Romney Ticket
The New York Times ^ | July 19, 2008 | MICHAEL COOPER and MICHAEL LUO

Posted on 07/18/2008 8:24:36 PM PDT by Plutarch

It was not so long ago that the idea that Senator John McCain would even entertain tapping Mitt Romney, his bitterest primary rival, as his running mate would have seemed preposterous, rating at least 7.0 on the strange-bedfellows scale.

The McCain-Romney feud was the juiciest of the Republican primary season, featuring two men who generally just did not seem to like each other. Mr. Romney said Mr. McCain would set a “liberal Democrat course as president.” He said that one of Mr. McCain’s proudest accomplishments, his campaign finance bill, took “a whack at the First Amendment,” and told voters grappling with money woes that Mr. McCain “has said time and again that he doesn’t understand the economy.” Mr. McCain, for his part, witheringly cast Mr. Romney as a flip-flopper.

But that was then.

These days Mr. Romney, a telegenic former Massachusetts governor, is serving as a wingman extraordinaire for Mr. McCain on cable television. He has dutifully raised money for Mr. McCain. And Mr. Romney has developed a reputation as a campaign surrogate who can talk fluently about the economy, and who has roots in Michigan, an important swing state.

Now Mr. Romney is attracting perhaps more buzz than anyone else as a potential running mate for the man he once derided... [excerpt]

Is he running for Vice-President of the Olympics ?

Why did he endorse the ACLU candidate, ultraleft rodent Rocky Anderson for Mayor of Salt Lake City ?

I asked you to name a major Conservative against Mitt Romney.

You can’t.

I know one, I know one:

any man who can go on national TV and argue so intensely FOR abortion and even FOR allowing underage girls to get an abortion with or without parental permission as long as she gets a judge’s approval is no conservative, no Republican, no Christian, not even a man at all. Not then. Not now. Not ever. This evil being has no moral bedrock.

As soon as Romney falls down on his knees on national TV in front of God and everyone; and repents and begs for forgiveness for all the innocent young lives that were murdered in the womb on his watch after he ran on the pro-abortion platform, then I will consider it. If the man had any integrity at all, he’d resign and spend the rest of his life and the rest of his money trying to undo some of the wrong he’s done. But not as president. That office is reserved for honest men of the highest character and integrity.

I supported him before I didn’t.

Truthfully, I’d like to see him as McLames VP.

Take it down about four notches and you might actually be taken seriously.

Only nut balls talk about the Anti-Christ.

The Pope is the Anti-Christ. The King is the Anti-Christ. Saddam Hussein is the Anti-Christ. My latest political opponent is the Anti-Christ. It has been going on for over a thousand years and none of them were the actual Anti-Christ.

Romney isn't even close to what the Bible said the Anti-Christ would be. Romney is a moderate to liberal Republican who ran one of our more liberal States and an Olympic games and who has changed his positions to be more conservative.

He has money and youth and possibly northeastern regional appeal, but I don't believe he is either Conservative enough or Christian enough to shore up McCain's obvious deficiencies with Conservatives.

Unlike folks who are bashing him here, I actually lived in MA while Mitt was Gov.

He did extremely well despite being frequently overridden by the communist and union thug state legislature.

People who live in say - TENNESSEE - have no idea how leftist Massachusetts is and what a testament it is to Mitt’s management and leadership skills that he got as much accomplished as he did.

Romney served as president and CEO of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games held in Salt Lake City. In 1999, the event was running $379 million short of its revenue benchmarks. Plans were being made to scale back the games in order to compensate for the fiscal crisis.[19] The Games were also damaged by allegations of bribery involving top officials, including then Salt Lake Olympic Committee (SLOC) President and CEO Frank Joklik. Joklik and SLOC vice president Dave Johnson were forced to resign.[20]

On February 11, 1999, Romney was hired as the new president and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee.[21] Romney revamped the organization’s leadership and policies, reduced budgets and boosted fundraising. He also worked to ensure the safety of the Games following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 by coordinating a $300 million security budget.[22] Despite the initial fiscal shortfall, the Games ended up clearing a profit of $100 million, not counting the $224.5 million in security costs contributed by outside sources.[23][24]

Romney contributed $1 million to the Olympics, and donated the $825,000 salary he earned as President and CEO to charity.[25] He wrote a book about his experience titled Turnaround: Crisis, Leadership, and the Olympic Games.[26]

So feeding trolls worked out for you, did it? Hey, you wanna go out of your way to turn off possible supporters, go right on ahead. Generally, if I support a candidate, I'd talk him up on the thread, not waste replies on others.

I'd pretty much prefer Mitt to go enjoy a few nice board positions and funnel money to the party. If he was on the bottom half of the ticket, hey, I'm already holding my nose for McCain, what's one more thing to complain about? But I'm not sure what the heck he's supposed to bring to the party - Massachusetts isn't a swing state, doesn't bring any of the south along with him, which McCain needs, doesn't even put a major state into play.

Now, is Mitt on the short list for Treasury or the like? Probably; I could see and not complain about him in many secretary positions. Health and Human Services would bring a white flaming rage from me, but that's about it.

But as a VP - if he had picked up big-big donors, and not mostly self financed, yeah, could see it, but no, that didn't happen. So I honestly don't see it going anywhere. Far more likely to find someone from Florida on the ticket.

I’ll take Romney as the VP along with Rush, Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, William F. Buckley, Tom Tancredo, Sean Hannity, Hugh Hewitt, and the Head of the ACU.

You can go spoon with Helen Thomas for all I care.

A nice, reasoned attempt to stump for your candidate. Problem is, I’ve known him for 14 years, and whatever positives you believe he is are the polar-opposite. I’ve seen the man tell bald-faced lies to a crowd without breaking a sweat. He thought it was cute lying to the MA electorate to try to get elected in 1994 (I was there), but it ain’t cute when he’s still lying his butt off now trying to convince the rubes he has “seen the light.” Sorry. This guy is in the class of Bubba for being a world-class liar and liberal fraud. At least Bubba had the common courtesy to run as a Democrat.

I don’t think I have the power to “turn off” or on supporters = especially here where most folks are quite entrenched.

I agree that Mitt could serve well in other capacities. If your HHS gripe is based on a belief that he is pro-choice, all I can say is that I don’t believe he is. I do believe he changed his position - to the right one.

Clinton, Gore, Kennedy, and others changed their minds too.

Ok, why do you think Mitt Romney is the Anti-Christ?

Seriously, has he done anything in his life that is opposite to what you believe, but has millions following him chanting "Change" or begging his forgiveness (i.e. Jessee after threating to remove the anti-Messiah's you know nuts)?

I am not a "Left Behind" fan, but I read a couple of the first books. The whole Jessee jackson thing made me think of how Nicholes controlled and scared the bejevies out of his enemies. Jessee was crawling and wetting all over himself to get Obama's forgivness after the open mic incident, and like Nicholes, Obama gracefully (in a sick way) gives it. Weird.

Romney is Romney. I keep going back and forth on if we can defeat the left one more time. I hope we can. I don't think Obama is the anti-christ, but I do think his policies will crush our economy. We might well head into a great depression and ultimately world war. bad stuff.

By the time the Anti-Christ would achieve power, it would be too late to do anything. This guy has set off warning bells for a long time now. I’m glad you’re at least acknowledging he is a liberal, however (but the argument that he HAD to be that way runs counter to a man in a Democrat state adjacent to him, Don Carcieri in RI, whom I could support for VP. Carcieri does govern like a Conservative). But believe me, I’ve heard every excuse and rationalization in the book to justify this guy. And as for his conversions, they are as phony and as opportunistic as could be. The man has had an obsession for the White House equal to Gore’s. Both believed their fathers had the Presidency stolen from them, and they’ve spent their entire adult lives trying to find a way to “avenge” them. These are not the kind of people to be entrusted with high office, or any office.
