From the Daily Beast article Barry/Barack when to Hawaii during Christmas of 1980. So it would appear he did travel to Hawaii between semesters or during a holiday break. Would a college kid, even one on full scholarship, have money to travel back to Hawaii twice in one year? Maybe, but seems like a burden financially.
