<Flashback>1927 Bath Michigan School Massacre....38 children killed (no guns used)
Wikipedia ^

The Bath School disaster is the name given to three bombings in Bath Township, Michigan, on May 18, 1927, which killed 38 elementary school children, two teachers, four other adults and the bomber himself; at least 58 people were injured. Most of the victims were children in the second to sixth grades (7–11 years of age [1]) attending the Bath Consolidated School. Their deaths constitute the deadliest mass murder in a school in U.S. history and the fourth-deadliest massacre in U.S. history, behind the Oklahoma City bombing, the Mountain Meadows massacre and 9/11. The bomber was school board treasurer Andrew Kehoe, 55 who died in a car bomb he set off after he drove up to the school as the crowd gathered to rescue survivors from the burning school.

I originally posted that link but had to change it as FR has a rule of no source links from wiki.

The difference is back in the day the lunatics seemed to have a motive, however deranged.

But your point about guns is spot on.

From Shot in the Dark:

Another deranged gunman has cut loose in another building full of people forbidden from being able to defend themselves and the children in their “care” by federal law.

Initial reports indicate the gunman – who was killed, somehow – was the father of one of the students.

How many more children need to die before we realize “gun free zones” don’t work?

UPDATE: Count up the number of school shootings we’ve seen in the past decade and a half, including two in Minnesota (with 11 dead) – all in “gun free zones”. What was that “definition of insanity” again?

In Israel, in the seventies, there were a number of attacks by terrorist gunmen on Israeli schools and school buses. The Israelis responded…how? By banning guns in schools, just to keep the law-abiding terrorists in line?

No. They allowed (and on field trips, required) teachers to be armed. And it worked. And it’s still working.

Link:http://www.shotinthedark.info/wp/?p=32394

An example from Israel:

In Gush Etzion, southeast of Jerusalem, two Palestinian gunmen wearing IDF uniforms burst into the Makor Haim yeshiva high school. Wielding guns and knives, they lightly injured two Israeli counselors before being shot dead.

The terrorists infiltrated Makor Haim, a kibbutz, sneaking into the main building of its high school seminary, run by world-renowned Talmudist, Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz. The terrorists entered a library room where seven of the boarding school’s counselors were meeting. Dressed as security guards, and armed with a knife and what appeared to be a gun — it later turned out to be a toy — ordered the seven to line up on one side of the room. A counselor, realizing they were terrorists, drew his personal firearm and opened fire. Another grabbed the fake gun from the other terrorist, wrestled him to the floor, while the first counselor shot him. The terrorists managed to stab two of the counselors before falling dead.

At the same time, the Beit Medrash (study hall) — adjacent to the library — was packed with students taking part in the weekly Thursday night “mishmar” all-night Torah study session, Israel National News reported.

An army official praised the quick response of the students and their counselors. “This could have ended much worse,” a source in the Central Command said.

Worst violent incident (excluding shooting/guns/etc) to school children happened in New London, Texas in 1937 when a gas buildup in the school basement exploded killing more than 295 students and teachers. The aftermath was the devolpment of an oderizer to give warning. Gas has no smell that’s why the oderizer was formulated. More at:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_London_School_explosion

New London lead to establishing profession license for engineers.

Incompetence is more deadly than violence, I suspect.

I had a college professor tell a failing classmate he should drop engineer and take pre-med. the student asked why the Prof thought he would do better in Pre-med. The Prof said he wouldn’t, but at least he would only kill people one at a time.

Aside from that I can’t really think of any serious mass shootings in Michigan which is a gun heavy state.

Probably the result of a poor installation. The kids had complained for over a week that they were getting headaches and some falling asleep at their desks.

Kehoe was an obvious nutcase anyway. Even from his childhood people got hurt and died around him.

SkyDancer: “Probably the result of a poor installation. The kids had complained for over a week that they were getting headaches and some falling asleep at their desks.”

There is a LOT more to the New London explosion; speaking form an engineering standpoint, it is an example of what NOT to do as well as it prompted the addition of that telling ‘smell’ to natural as ... I know I’m going regret not putting in a link to substantiate this, but I’m pressed for time today ...

Aw, nuts, here’s the story on wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_London_School_explosion

Story excerpt:

- - - - - - -

The school was built on sloping ground, and a large dead-air space was contained beneath the structure. The school board had overridden the original architect’s plans for a boiler and steam distribution system, instead opting to install 72 gas heaters throughout the building.

Early in 1937, the school board canceled their natural gas contract and had plumbers install a tap into Parade Gasoline Company’s residue gas line in order to save money.

This practice, while not explicitly authorized by local oil companies, was widespread in the area. The natural gas extracted with the oil was seen as a waste product and was flared off. As there was no value to the natural gas, the oil companies turned a blind eye. This “raw” or “wet” gas varied in quality from day to day, even from hour to hour.

I’ve used the New London School as part of safety in design class at engineering companies.
