What is wrong with this picture?
It's one of those things that you don't get, until you get it. Unless you are eternally empathetic, you look at this photo and don't see much wrong at all.
To Anne Belanger, mother of Miles, the photo is unbearable to look at.
When the class portrait for her son's Grade 2 class came home, she opened it excitedly, and immediately shoved it back in the envelope. She couldn't look at it. It broke her heart.
Anne's son, Miles, has Spinal Muscular Atrophy. At the age of 13 months, his parents were told that Miles would never walk, he has spent his life in a wheelchair.
Miles knows he's different than the rest of the kids, but he still tries to fit in. So there he is, on the far side of the image, neck craning as far as he can to stretch into the frame with the rest of his friends. He's beaming. It's school picture day and he's thrilled.
But the photo still broke Anne's heart. The photo was a clear example of how set apart her son is from society. Instead of a big group hug photo with Miles at the center, and classmates and teachers all around, a fully inclusive image, he was stuffed off to the side, some 3 feet away. An after thought, it seems.

And that’s exactly why this nation has no backbone....everything is an issue...and the people today do not know how to stand when the going gets rough.
That kid will have more strength and guts and stamina then the entire class put together when he’s an adult..because he will learn how to overcome “unfairness”....unless his mother holds him back.

Okay, if you fell for it, fine. But please don't besmirch those posters who simply rolled their eyes over this ludicrous non-story by accusing them of "posting ugly" about the disabled child. I think I read every post on this thread and didn't see a single post that said anything negative about the unfortunate child, and why would there be? None of this embarrassing publicity is his fault. If there is such a post, please direct me to it and I will stand corrected. Thanks.

Why do you harbor so much anger toward families and caregivers of disabled children? What harm do you think would come from including this boy in the group of students? And last but not least, why do you treat this like a threat to you personally?

Most of us understood how inappropriate it was when Bill Maher called Trig Palin “retarded.” I don’t see how it suddenly becomes acceptable when a FReeper does the same thing.

It’s an emotional thread and topic (one the Mom and media knew would be sensational). Posters are falling for it and some, not wardaddy, are expessing outrage and faux compassion. Others are choosing to attack posters they don’t like, lol, and make issues they themselves have ;) Oh the wonders of the internet.
I don’t recall seeing a post negative about the child, other than those by the PC police who are trying to make an issue where there isn’t one.

I’ll take that bet. I think at least one of them is female, and probably even a mother. A very emotional mother, with guilt issues. Sometimes they divulge more than they intend to, without even knowing it.
I still post a little bit, but I don’t have as much time for it as I used to.
