Huckabee for President - Conservatives Need to Rally Behind a Single Candidate
Myth Debunker | Sept. 1, 2007 | Yomin Postelnik

Posted on 09/01/2007 9:13:44 PM PDT by Yomin Postelnik

To have a conservative candidate as our nominee, we need to rally behind a single candidate and need to do so fast. Mike Huckabee is an articulate defender of conservative values, likeable and electable.

When the choice of Presidential Candidates became clear, I wrote that both Rep. Duncan Hunter and Gov. Mike Huckabee are both true conservatives and effective communicators of conservative philosophy. They have common sense, yet compassionate, philosophies and would both make excellent presidents. While Rep. Hunter should be receiving far more publicity than he is, the fact is that, through no fault of his own, he's not. The media machine doesn't give much coverage to leading conservative voices and generally doesn't give much exposure to second tier candidates to begin with. A lot that says about a media that simply ratifies the frontrunner of the day, but it also means that Rep. Hunter is unlikely to win and efforts must be concentrated elsewhere to ensure that we nominate a conservative. Gov. Huckabee has shown himself to be a resiliant campaigner and is positioning himself for shot at the nomination. Those who do not want a nominee with a big government philosophy would do best by rallying behind him. The Governor would make a fine President. He has shown tremendous strength, coming across very well in every debate so far and is the best candidate who has a shot at the nomination. For these reasons I'm now endorsing Mike Huckabee. While it is my hope that he won't be a vice presidential running mate to a big government republican, he would make a fine president and an excellent candidate if he's on top of the ticket.

Simply put, we need a candidate who does not believe in enlarging a government that has already grown far too big. That candidate needs to be an articulate representative of conservative philosophy and needs the skills and organization to realistically be able to capture the nomination. Gov. Huckabee is one such candidate and has positioned himself as the best conservative candidate in the race.

Huckabee Calls for National Smoking Ban in Public Places

Kinda blows that whole "doesn't-believe-in-enlarging-government" thing out of the water, doesn't it?

Plus this: Huckabee backs D.C. voting rights bill

Huckabee is a useless, nanny state RINO.

Compared to the others, the National Smoking Ban in public is child’s play. He’s for protecting the family structure and voters rights against activist courts, something Thompson and Rudy are against and the other two can turn on a dime. We may disagree on some things (though the national smoking ban in public places has too sides to it and doesn’t go against conservative principals or threaten democracy - as do activist courts) but he’s one candidate who doesn’t come across as willing to sell his grandmother to get the nomination, is an articulate and sincere conservative and understands and connects with voters who realize the issues facing the public today. A smoking ban in public places will be supported by all candidates if it becomes popular and unlike the others, it would be his only big government stand.

The measure would give another seat to Utah. It gives DC residents a voice without hurting the conservative cause. Better this than an eventual push to include DC without the Utah balance.

He’s excellent but he simply won’t win the nomination at this point while Huckabee does have a shot. Unlike Iowa, no major candidates competed in TX and while I wish the media would either give more coverage to this or that at least Republican voters stopped looking to the media to choose their candidates, we see that neither of these is happening. At this point we need to rally behind a candidate with some traction to ensure a conservative nominee as opposed to one of the four most commonly mentioned. Huckabee would also do far better as nominee against the Dem. candidate. He resonates with segments of the population we need. If people were smart and independent thinkers, Hunter would be in the top tier. But we need to win and Huckabee’s a good man on our side who gives us a shot.

So I take it you’re saying that Fred Thompson isn’t a conservative? Please tell us why it is that you think so.

At this point, Hunter’s not going to win. We need to see who can prevent the race from going to a liberal candidate, one who supports these plus, unlike Huckabee, a whole lot more. Reagan put it best saying that if we agree with someone 80% of the time, chances are we’re friends. At this point we really need to look at how to prevent someone who either disagrees on 80% of the major issues or someone who’d probably embrace the hippie lifestyle if it would help him get elected from getting the nomination. Huckabee seems to be the only one who can help do that.

Is Fred better than the other 3? Yes. A whole lot. But his refusal to support a constitutional ammendment to protect marriage (and to also protect republican democrary and prevent rule by fiat on the part of judges) is a serious problem.
I see a lot criticizing Huckabee on immigration. Fred has an even more liberal policy, as do the others. Fred isn’t an articulate defender of conservatism, he’s a nice guy but it almost ends there. He’s not going to shape anyone’s ideology. Huckabee can.

I just don’t see the DC vote as a big issue the way it’s being done b/c we get an extra seat in Utah to balance it out. With the other stuff, I agree on the issues but we need to be pragmatic to prevent someone who disagrees with us a lot more than him from being the nominee. If Hunter makes a surge I’ll be ecstatic but Huckabee is clearly on our side a lot more than the others.

Either:
- You like his liberal positions
or
-You call yourself a conservative but are willing to push a liberal if that is what you think it takes to win.

Pathetic.

I think the general voting population has had enough of both Texas and Arkansas presidential candidates.

Like you I’d like to prevent a big government lib who belongs in the other party from getting the nod. I don’t see another way than supporting someone who’s basically on our side, is sincere, will stop activist judges and is electable.
Reagan had some liberal positions too, but few and far between. Huckabee is similar in this regard. I see the party willing to sell its conservative values down the whole by nominating one of two northeastern big govt fanatics. Huckabee seems to be the only candidate who can stop this. Who do you support and how do you see him winning? At this point our eye has to be on the ball - preventing the establishment of two defacto Dem parties. Huckabee’s not perfect but he’s no Dem.
