Answering the "McCain Voted with Bush 90%" attack (Ideas for McCain Campaign)
1curiousmind

Posted on 09/08/2008 5:55:59 AM PDT by 1curiousmind

I seldom post vantities, but have been frustrated by the lack of answer (at least that I've been able to find) to what has become Obama's last stand - trying to convince the country that McCain is Bush's political twin. If any group can debunk this myth with force and creativity it is the FR community. Please post ideas, facts, articles, and other related info here. I'll start it off with a few ideas.

“Since McCain said it, McCain is hardly going to “debunk” it.”

_____________________

Yeah. Good point. I guess “debunk” isn’t the right term. And I understand how they have Obama on the defensive and want to stay on offense. That’s why I think an ad pointing out some of these specific votes could be affective. But they need to be well done.

How about:

"John McCain is widely known as a Party Maverick precisely BECAUSE he has not always supported the President.

BUT John McCain DID support the President when it came to legislation aimed at funding our troops and the pursuit of victory in Iraq. Senator Obama voted 100% of the time not to support our troops, or the pursuit of victory.

In MODERN politics, DISAGREEING with someone 10% of the time is ALMOST like being from a different political party.

Heck, the Dems and Repubs only have substantive disagreement between them on about 15% of the issues facing our country. Both sides just like to intensely highlight THOSE differences and hope we don’t notice them screwing the citizens the other 85% of the time

If Dems want to pound on how bad things are then blame the Democrat congress right now. they have labeled Bush a lame duck so it must be the Democrats. We have all done better under the Republicans. Obama’s economic plan will do this country in.

And Bush only voted 65% inline with me. Which means, McCain either agreed more with me, or not, depending on how far Left him and Bush were feeling...

BFD...

Democrats vote 100% inline with Karl Marx.

Missed Votes

Barack Obama has missed 290 votes (45.5%) during the current Congress. See a list of his missed votes since 1991 or see a full list of vote missers.
Voting with Party

Barack Obama has voted with a majority of his Democratic colleagues 96.0% of the time during the current Congress. This percentage does not include votes in which Obama did not vote. See a list of his votes against his party since 1991, a list of all Senators in the 110th Congress with a similar score, or a full list of party voters.

Obama didn’t vote on the Iraq war yet he says he opposed it. In fact, most of the votes in his career are “present.”

Obama: “I don’t need to make tough choices. I’m a celebrity.”

Obama claims that John McCain has voted with GWB 90% of the time.

Obama, however, has voted with Pelosi and Reid 97% of the time.

GWB’s approval is at 30%, while congress, lead by Pelosi and Reid is at 9%.

:)

How many times did Democrats as a whole vote “with” Bush? That’s easily answered. Any vote that wasn’t vetoed can be considered a vote “with” Bush.

The simple fact is, Democrats, especially since 2006, have done little beyond talk in advancing their agenda. That’s the response that needs to be made.

“In my reading of the US Constitution is that the President doen’t have a vote”

That’s what I’ve been thinking the whole time they have been saying this...I told my husband, he CAN’T VOTE...he can only sign it to legislation or VETO...

IMHO These could be effective talking points.

“Senator Obama wants to talk about votes, well, he should concentrate on an area with which he is more familiar since he has one of the highest “no vote” record in the senate.”

“Barack Obama voted with Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi 97% of the time including (fill in the blank). Barack Obama. Is that Change?”

McCain's campaign should do more to show that he doesn't even have Governor Palin's experience. Obama is very, very afraid that his lack of experience compares poorly with the VP candidate. He wants it out of the media. That's why Obama is featuring the Bush ads while hoping that Palin makes a mistake.

How about and ad...:

"Senator John McCain's experience for the top job is unquestioned. Not so Senator Obama's."

[Then display on screen comparison and read-over of GOVERNOR Palin's experience vs. Obama's.]

"Senator Obama. Third? [show photo of Biden] Or fourth?"

"2) Remember all the times when the news media lead with this type of line: "Today, Senator John McCain proved himself once again as a maverick refusing to go along with the Bush administration ....." I'm sure they could find dozen's of clips of Andrea Mitchell, Tom Brokaw, even Keith Olberman, stating this. I'd love to see a 30 second montage of these sound bites. If nothing else, one of those youtube videos."

Excellent! I like this idea.

It's backfiring on them. McCain/Palin are out talking about moving the country forward while Obama/Biden keep talking about "Bush, Bush, Bush." This only serves to make Obama's crowds think of Bush everytime they hear or think of Obama. Word association is a tricky game and Obama is driving people away with his "Bush, Bush, Bush" talk.

BO is now campaigning against GW and SP. The democrats have their heads down watching the pedals. They have no idea where they are going.

Voters know that McCain is not a party loyalist, and are far more concerned about the differences between McCain and Obama, as they should be. The informed voters also know not to buy into the silly 90% talking point because a high percentage of votes are on procedural issues that have nothing to do with policy. And on policy, there are vast differences. For starters... McCain has a long standing record of managing deficit spending through responsiblility and making sure tax cuts are accompanied by spending cuts. Bush does not. We know McCain will veto many pork bills. Bush rarely saw a bill he didn’t sign. McCain will drill for oil offshore, and with Palin’s influence, perhaps in ANWR. Bush has not. McCain is against torture and Bush is not. McCain supports campaign finance reform. Bush did not. McCain has a long history of bipartisanship in reaching across the aisle and sponsoring legislation with prominent members of the Democratic party: Feingold, Kennedy. Bush has not worked well with Democrats. McCain wants to shake up Washington and chose an outsider maverick governor to be his VP. Bush brought Washington’s dinosaurs back into the picture: Cheney, James Baker, etc. McCain unfortunately supports a temporary worker program. Bush does not. But McCain does want to secure the borders. Bush has not. McCain unfortunately supports measures to reduce climate change that Bush does not. Etc. The list goes on and on.
