Charlie Gibson Interviews John McCain on Bailout
ABC News ^

Posted on 09/25/2008 4:02:49 PM PDT by GOPinCa

The following is a transcript of ABC News' Charles Gibson's interview with Senator John McCain on the proposed $700 billion bailout for Wall Street and the status of the first presidential debate, for "World News with Charles Gibson" on Sept. 25, 2008.

GIBSON: Senator, do we have an agreement on legislation to address this problem?

MCCAIN: We do not, but I am very hopeful that we are making progress and I know we are making progress. I have talked to many of my colleagues today and had conversations with them, talked about this issue and have no doubt about the crisis we are facing. We're talking about jobs all over America, we're talking about loans, we're talking about ability of small businesses to stay in operation. And my colleagues are aware of that, and I'm confident that we're going to move forward and get this issue in a bipartisan agreement which is what the American people want.

GIBSON: What's the hang up?

That’s not saying much about Palin. She’s going to have to face lots of men as VP and as Prez (if they make it that far).

Frank and Obama are blaming McCain right now for their pork-laden deal not being passed, yet you are mad at McCain? I don’t get it.

Point well taken.

But on the opportunities she had to mop the floor with that bloated, self-important, stuffed giblet, she wilted under his specs-down-his-nose, job-interviewer, sneer.

She wilted under Katty Whoric, too.

She seems to do better when she has a crowd with her. I think she’ll squash Biden at the debates. I believe she would squash Obama in front of a crowd.

But the one-on-one interview with a hostile host does not appear to be her milieu.

I wouldn’t say a debate on foreign policy would be pointless, though McCain would mop the floor with Zero (who, frankly, must be overjoyed at the idea that he might get away with not having to go toe-to-toe with McCain on foreign policy). I suspect that the debate will, in fact, go ahead and that McCain will crush Obama; then again, if we are at square one tomorrow on the financial crisis, I think Zero would have to concede on the debate question. Win-win for McCain.

What’s the holdup????

To be honest, I’m not so sure McCain was so smart doing this interview, putting his campaign on hold, and trying to postpone both debates.

Sure it will play to the stupid people who don’t ever pay attention, or have zero clue how Washington/Congress works, however, MANY MANY people ARE paying attention now that everyone’s job, bank & retirement accounts are disappearing while the CEOs who have been the orchestrators of this meltdown are getting multimillion dollar severance packages. THEY’RE PISSED. They’re paying CLOSE attention, and learning exactly HOW it all works.

McCain is not on the Banking/Finance Committee. The meetings on the “bailout” are done behind closed doors - doors that McCain cannot get past. Period. To those that KNOW how it all works (a large part of the GOP base that are losing their portfolios), this doesn’t play well and looks very political.

What is looking worse, is that many republicans in Congress have figured out that people ARE paying attention, a few republicans on the B&FC who reached an agreement this morning, have now suddenly said, “wait! We do NOT agree!” Why are they doing this? To make it seem like McCain actually had something to do with it?

Maybe it’s a smart move. Maybe there are more stupid people than I know. And I hope this gamble will work.

But NONE of the conservatives I know are happy about this. (I work in the finance/insurance industry and we deal with A LOT OF $$$.) They just think he looks like a coward, and they’re enraged! THEY pay attention, and know EXACTLY how things on the Banking & Finance Committee works.

My boss this afternoon: “This is nothing more than a political move, and it’s embarrassing! What is McCain trying to do, bury the GOP once and for all?” He then went on to mumble something about how he should never have trusted McCain since he was the only republican to be a part of the Keating Five. (He wanted Jeb to run, so he’s been cranky for a while...)

It’s not a good day here...... :-(

Maybe you need some smarter friends.

BTW, Robert Bennett, Chief Counsel to the Democrats during the investigation, said that McCain should not be included in the investigation and that their was not evidence of any wrongdoing by Senator McCain.

McCain is winning on this financial bailout issue. Changing the subject to foreign policy (or anything) is what Obama wants, do not give it to him.

The Foreign policy debates are pointless given the critical discussions underway about the bailout.

“We can talk later about foreign policy, right now we have problems to solve.” Obamnation looks like a clueless rookie politician IMHO.

If McCain truly is walking the walk, stopping a gov't takeover of our banks, he is not talking the talk, when he continually cites "bipartisan" as the supreme objective of the deal.

Capitalism needs the support of the populace to succeed, this bail-out will discredit capitalism, maybe for ever.

“Maybe you need some smarter friends.”

I’m in CA. Most of my friends and family are lefties - we just agree to disagree and don’t talk about it. Keeps the peace.

The conservatives I refer to are my financial investor co-workers. They’re ÜberSmart and VERY GOOD with VERY LARGE sums of money. They’ve seen this coming FOREVER: You do NOT sell variable mortgages who were leant to low-income families as guaranteed pay-out securities. That would be considered fraud for you and me, and we’d be in prison.

I am sorry, but from what I am hearing the stuff that was tacked on to this bill was the killer of it. Some of it was just crazy and republicans should just list them when talking why they would not go for the dem bill, it was disgusting.

now if he crafts together a better deal then he gets a big boost on this issue.

It's not just that. If they can't reach an agreement, then one of three things happens: the Democrats pass their awful $700 billion bailout with all Dems and McCain can then say, see what they did because they have a majority? They just gave $700 billion to those Wall Street crooks in a monstrous bill. The second thing, if they don't reach an agreement, then McCain, when he's president January 20 and hopefully has more Republicans in the house and senate, he can then work out a bipartisan plan to fix this mess. They don't want that. And the truth is, folks, this "crisis" didn't just happen overnight. It's been brewing for months...years. Nothing is going to happen on Monday if there is no deal. The market will drop 300 points in a hissy fit, and by Friday it will be back around 11000.

Now, if McCain keeps the Republicans cool and they put out a version of Newt's plan and say, hey, we'll agree to provide discount loans to these companies AT INTEREST, but none of this socialism doo doo -- and the Dems accept it? OMG. He saved the day and the Dems look weak and pissy and out to hurt this country. If they don't accept it, they look like the petty America hating socialists that they are. The way Bush played this -- HIM announcing this crisis, the Dem voters ALL came out against this bailout. Now they've got to stick to their fake outrage.

Win, win, win, win, win!

I’m in CA. also, I know all about keeping the peace :)

I had to prove to my aunt today that the Democrats blocked the legislation that could have prevented this. She was not happy when I showed her the proposed legislation in 2003, she left in a huff.

What happens if the Banking Committee comes up with something completely different that is truly bipartisan, and McCain nor Obama have nothing to do with it, since neither are allowed into those meetings?

Who wins then?

"Who wins then?"

(1) AMERICA, (2) John McCain who forced bipartisanship on a reasonable bill that was NOT being considered before!
