An Open Letter to a Friend

Last night I had a rather heated discussion with a conservative and very smart guy I have known for some 45 years. Yes, that's right, 45 YEARS! We grew up together, we saw each other turn from kids to boys to men and during that time we often went opposite directions but never lost our appreciation for each others company.

Somehow through all those years we have managed to stay in relatively close contact even though we're physically separated by hundreds of miles, and equally amazing we ended up astonishingly sympatico with each others values and beliefs.

Now to the disagreement. We had discussed several topics and as usual agreed down the line when the subject of Hussein's birth certificate came up. It was at that point in time that my great friend uttered something that floored me. ..."Does it really matter?". His assertion basically being that the constitutional provision concerning natural birth was probably insignificant compared to the damage it could potentially do to the country if this was pursued and "The One" would be shown to be of foreign birth.

His concern for our great nation and his willingness to swallow a bitter pill for the good of the country is as admirable as it is misguided. There are but 3 requirements that our brilliant founding fathers felt important enough to include in the second most sacred of documents ever published and one of those three is that the head of the Executive Branch of our government be a "NATURAL BORN CITIZEN". What was their intent? That could be discussed endlessly, but the bottom line is it wasn't parsed, modified with caveats, or diluted. It is what it is and to ignore that basic requirement is to essentially admit that the constitution is rather than a sacred and inviolate document only to be amended as prescribed, but, rather, simply a "guide" to be invoked when convenient and discarded when expedient.

Many readers of this blog may question my candor on this, but, I DO truly hope that Obama does meet the constitutional requirements to be POTUS. As G [my bud] acccurately argues, the alternative could be devastating to the country. But, more devastating yet, would be the subverting of our nation of laws to accomodate our nation of men. An old adage comes to mind...."The road to hell is often paved with the best of intentions" The natural born requirement may not be good, or right, or even smart but it is the law and to disregard it in an attempt to foster momentary political harmony is to delegitimize all that we are.

Doesn’t the fact that he was born to an American citizen automatically confer citizenship? Even if Hawaii was a Territory? McCain was born in the Canal Zone when it was American but not American soil.

Donofrio’s case of course was rejected but the one forwarded by Scalia [name escapes me] is still pending.

Where have you been? There has been a constant ‘subverting’ drip in this nation for the past 30 years. I doubt if even our troops coming home from Iraq will recognize this country now. We’ve become ‘progressive’ beyond recognition. “We don’t need no stinkin’ rule of law!’ say the ‘progressives’.

The crux of the contention is whether Obama was born in Kenya {as his grandmother claims] or Hawaii. His father was a British subject so the 2 citizen parents argument is not applicable. The long form of his BC would answer that question.

Yes! Obama is a U. S. citizen. His problem is he's not a "natural born citizen."

This chart lays it out.

100% agreement.

The potential for a unqualified/ineligible person to assume the rein of the worlds most important(even if the most well liked) and influential country would be devastating in terms of precedent. It is called “Usurpation”. Loyalty to the nation, US Constitution and its people is the one thing a usurper would not have, by definition.

The fate of the people of the US and our way of life would be threatened by the world view in which national survival is not a paramount and duty driven obligation.

The idea that the US can be stripped bare to improve the world's general condition is akin to burning down your house in a simple minded effort to keep a neighborhood warm for one cold night when most or all of the other houses are shacks. All that is accomplished is forcing your own to live in a shack as well.

For what is worth, my .01 euros...

God Bless America, MOLON LABE

There MAY be some grey situations. What if one parent, residing the requisite time as the law prescribed at that time, is a natural born citizen and the other parent is naturalized? Are the children considered natural born or native born? Does it make a difference if naturalization occurs before or after birth?

no it does not, unless the parents are dipolmats or on Military duty such as McCain. Obama’s mother was not either of the above.

He admits on his own web site that he was born to a british father. here is exactly what it says on his web site fight the smears.

“When Barack Obama Jr. was born on Aug. 4,1961, in Honolulu, Kenya was a British colony, still part of the United Kingdom’s dwindling empire. As a Kenyan native, Barack Obama Sr. was a British subject whose citizenship status was governed by The British Nationality Act of 1948. That same act governed the status of Obama Sr.‘s children.

Since Sen. Obama has neither renounced his U.S. citizenship nor sworn an oath of allegiance to Kenya, his Kenyan citizenship automatically expired on Aug. 4,1982.”

What if? What if? What if?

We are having this discussion because of Obama. He has one American parent and one Kenyan parent. There are no "what ifs."

Are you serious? See the post above about US taxpayer’s money at the UN fer cryinoutloud. Consider the 2nd A was “rescued” by ONE FRIGGIN VOTE in “Heller”. The fact that it was even a question is frightening, but one vote from extinct? Face it, we had a 200 year experiment in government. It is over. We have a “Fed Reserve” printing 2 TRILLION DOLLARS and they won’t even tell us who they gave it to? C’mon, face it, it is over. We have tolerated things the founders would have hung people for for several decades now and no one has carried a rifle into the streets in the defense of the Constitution that I have heard about. Face it, it is over here and if we had a “Western Frontier” most of us at FR would be headed for it
