Obama Op-Ed Dials Up the Fear to Get His $1 Trillion Stimulus Plan Passed

President Barack Obama has written an Op-Ed Piece that appears in the Washington Post today, in which he rolls out the big gun of fear in order to pressure Congress to pass his nearly $1 Trillion Economic Stimulus Plan. Obama warns that unless the package is passed swiftly, America may plunge into an economic recession "we may not be able to reverse":

By now, it's clear to everyone that we have inherited an economic crisis as deep and dire as any since the days of the Great Depression. Millions of jobs that Americans relied on just a year ago are gone; millions more of the nest eggs families worked so hard to build have vanished. People everywhere are worried about what tomorrow will bring.

What Americans expect from Washington is action that matches the urgency they feel in their daily lives -- action that's swift, bold and wise enough for us to climb out of this crisis.

Because each day we wait to begin the work of turning our economy around, more people lose their jobs, their savings and their homes. And if nothing is done, this recession might linger for years. Our economy will lose 5 million more jobs. Unemployment will approach double digits. Our nation will sink deeper into a crisis that, at some point, we may not be able to reverse.

That's why I feel such a sense of urgency about the recovery plan before Congress. With it, we will create or save more than 3 million jobs over the next two years, provide immediate tax relief to 95 percent of American workers, ignite spending by businesses and consumers alike, and take steps to strengthen our country for years to come.

This plan is more than a prescription for short-term spending -- it's a strategy for America's long-term growth and opportunity in areas such as renewable energy, health care and education. And it's a strategy that will be implemented with unprecedented transparency and accountability, so Americans know where their tax dollars are going and how they are being spent. . . . . . MORE
If Franklin Roosevelt worked hard to quell the fears of Americans facing the Great Depression ("We have nothing to fear but fear itself."), President Obama is seeking to dial up the fear in order to get what he wants. Let's hope Republicans in the Senate will not be cowed by these tactics into going along with the current plan which does little to create jobs, and does a lot to fund every Democratic special interest group that has had a hand out for the last 30 years.

He’s in a tough position. Flim-flam men are usually able to be out of the room by the time you figure out the scam. That’s why he’s successful as a street organizer. When they have to explain the inner workings of the magic box that turns lead into gold, and why they’re selling the box instead of just using it themselves they start sweating.

Imagine how he’d whine if he faced a real crisis like an attack on US soil.

Obama wants some Republicans to scapegoat on this spending, but he doesn’t need them. He’s getting worried that he is wasting time, trying to get them on board, because every day that goes by, more and more voters are waking up to the meaning of CHANGE, and it’s not what they thought they were voting for.

That really hits the nail on the head. Obama's whole career has been an iterative series of steps: Show up, Get noticed, make a splash, move on.

He did this at colleges, at Harvard Law review, in Chicago, in the state senate, in the US senate.

Now he's got to sit in one place for 4 long years and everyone is going to stare at him and say, "So. What have you got?"

Interesting that a President who just said he doesn’t understand Economics is given space in the Washington Post to give his self-described IGNORANT OPINION about the bill.

A real President would have had one of his professional economic advisors write the op-ed.

And the number one thing no President of the United States of America should EVER say.....EVER!

“Our nation will sink deeper into a crisis that, at some point, we may not be able to reverse.”

This is what I sent to Senate and House Republican Leadership and my CongressCritters:

I have a huge problem, sir. The Current President ‘warned that the financial crisis will turn into “a catastrophe” if the [Stimulus] bill isn’t passed quickly.’ WHY? What’s his reasoning? What “catastrophe?” It needs to be elucidated so that Congress and the Voters know exactly what he’s talking about. I disagree with his statement.

I don’t think The Current President even knows what he’s suggesting. There won’t be a “financial catastrophe” if Congress slows down and studies each line of the so called, Stimulus Bill. The Bill by any other name is a huge Porkulus Bill. And I hear that some Republicans have tried to get their Pork added to the original Bill. And I hear that Sen Bi-Partisan McCain has been recruited by The Current President to try to “twist a few Republican arms” to go along with this hurried-up Bill.

You are old enough to know that there is a reason behind every “hurry up and do this” Legislation. And that reason usually benefits the author of the Bill or the person demanding that everyone else “hurry up.” Let’s look at this more closely. Who benefits from the “hurry up?” Why is there so much Pork in this Stimulus Bill. It goes way beyond most Pork-filled Bills. AND because the Pork is so predominant and noticeable, I contend that the Pork has been included in an effort to disguise the real purpose of the Bill.

Look a little deeper into this Bill. Read it all. Read every line. Cross out the Pork and then look at what’s left. Who benefits the most? Is there lobbying involved and will they benefit from the Bill? There’s something going on here that makes me very suspicious. I hope my letter has helped make you suspicious of the motives behind this “Stimulus Bill” too.
