Good thing NONE of my firearms are affected by EMP.

What happens in an EMP blast is that some significant percentage of the bomb's energy gets converted to electro-magnetic energy. Unmentioned in alarmist articles is how much energy you would need to affect the whole US.

The wiki on EMP has some more information. The "Starfish Prime" test that affected Hawaii involved a 1.4 MEGATON bomb detonated at 400 km altitude. To knock out all electronics and electrical transmission in the continental US, you would need a HUGE H-bomb (or an array of smaller ones) detonated out in space. Building multi-megaton bombs, plus being able to get them to orbital altitude is a non-trvial undertaking.

The effects described sound pretty much to what happened in New Orleans during the hurricane.

With no help coming. With no police, no radios, no transportation, no anything.

Food will be gone in a few days, clean water soon thereafter. Dysentery, cholera, malnutrition and survival of the fittest will follow on after that.

There is no sustainable way to go back to the 1800s without a massive depopulation of the US.

It's not going to happen the moment the bomb goes off, but the country won't look the same 3 weeks later.

How did we survive before electricity? How do millions of third world people live without nearly comparable infrastructure?

The answer to both questions is: When you live on a farm, you don't need much infrastructure.

Up until 150 years ago, pretty much everyone lived on a farm. Much of the world still survives on subsistence-level agriculture. They don't need electricity.

But the 7 million yuppies living in NYC? No power? No water? No restaurants? They'd be hurting.

Imagine the fun things we could do to the perpetrator(s).

‘But some folks with guns will come and kill you for your food and water.’

I view that as a delivery of new guns to my doorstep, sorry. And if they drive, I’ll get a new vehicle or two out of it.

No joke. Back in the seventies, when I converted this building from a garage to a studio, I wrapped the entire thing in space blankets, to reduce heat loss, then put foam insulation and siding over that. Inside the block walls, I installed studs and foil-backed fiberglass. It worked great. The TV heats the entire building, most of the time.

Then they invented the cell phone... ooops.

I thought about insulating with space blankets myself. In fact I do have some draped on the outside wall and floor joists to keep my water pipes from freezing.

Lol. Yeah, a cellphone wont work well in that environment. I was doing some high power testing so the faraday cage was copper mesh and it was so my laptop and cellphone wouldn’t go poof.

That sounds more dangerous than the EMP. ;)

Thanks for the warm reception, Free Republic.

Without infrastructure - no trucks delivering food, no drinking water, etc., how long before people start dying of disease? How effective will hospitals be? Sure, many of us would survive, but how would we get to eat when the grocery stores are empty? How will the police get to protect people when their cars won’t start, and the fire engines won’t start? Overstated? Who knows? And Iran just launched a satellite, so they now have ICBM capability. Plus, he mentioned that there were alternative means of delivery that would be much more difficult to stop. And Barack Hussein Obama won’t fund “unproven missile defense systems” so who’ll be protecting us?

“On a serious note, as others have pointed out, an EMP won’t kill people— at least not outright. It’s the cascading effects that will.”

I think that may be the author’s point. But thank you kindly for all of the clever and original Nancy Pelosi-math compliments.

It’s been bad this winter. I even had trouble with one of my toilet drains freezing.

There is no sustainable way to go back to the 1800s without a massive depopulation of the US.

Illegal aliens + offspring = ~40 million

Obama voters = ~60 million

Federal Government employees = ~15 million

Government sub-contractors ~10 million

Problem solved.
