Can a Conservative Work as an Auditor for the IRS in Good Conscience ?
Feb 25,2009

Posted on 02/25/2009 5:40:26 AM PST by SeekAndFind

Hello friends at FR,

I have a question for all conservatives out there.

My friend ( who is a staunch conservative like me ) got laid off from his job as a financial analyst at Bear Sterns last year (the company imploded as you all know). He's been with the company for over 10 years. It has been 6 months and he could not find any suitable work. He's had several interviews with no job offers at all. He is 53 years old and finds it difficult to compete with younger workers ( even when he indicated his willingness to lower salary expectations ).

He came across an advertisement from the IRS and called the number. It seems that they viewed his background very favorably.

The job is that of Internal Revenue Agent and the IRS is looking for MANY such people nationwide.

Here's the job description :

--------------------------------------- INTERNAL REVENUE AGENT (COMPUTER AUDIT SPECIALIST)

WHO MAY BE CONSIDERED:

Applications will be accepted from United States Citizens and Nationals.

JOB SUMMARY:

WHY IS THE IRS A GREAT PLACE TO WORK?

We employ talented people in a wide variety of professional career fields. Not only do you get first class training when you walk in the door, your professional skills are kept sharp and up-to-date with specialized training delivered by some of the best instructors in and outside of the government. Far-reaching impact. Varied challenges.

Tremendous advancement potential. It all adds up.

The Large and Mid-Size Business (LMSB) Internal Revenue Agent is a professional accountant who examines and audits individual, business, and corporate tax returns to determine correct federal tax liabilities and conduct examinations relating to compliance with technical requirements imposed by the Internal Revenue Code.

LMSB Internal Revenue Agents are challenged every day. Challenges come in the form of research and developing issues and during communications with taxpayers. ----------------------------------------------------

It pays reasonably well and you are TRAINED to do your job.

My friend is desperate to get a job and feels that the description fits him well. His main problem is this --- he is a conservative who has been openly expressed his support of a flat tax, voted for men like Steve Forbes and Mike Huckabee ( who favored the fair tax ), and feels like part of the job description is harassing small business owners.

So, my question to the good people of FR is this -- can a conservative in good conscience work for the IRS ? How do I advise my friend ?

Thanks, I am all ears to any good advise ( please, no smart alec responses ).

Does he think Conservatism supports the intrusion of government into people’s private lives?

That is his dilemma, otherwise I wouldn't even be posting this question. To my friend, small and medium sized business are the true heroes in America's economy. They provide services and products people buy and live on and employ over half of our working populace. His question is this -- is AUDITING small businesses an intrusion ? Or is it a necessary evil ?

This will increasingly become a problem when the only jobs are those working for "community-based" organizations, in socialized medicine systems (now forced to provide abortions), in government jobs, in private organizations who are fulfilling government contracts for things you find repugnant, teaching in government schools being forced to indoctrinate, forced into union jobs, etc.

It's easy to see how we could get to a point where buying and selling will be limited to the "ideologically correct."

He could be busy for his entire career just investigating Democrat members of Congress.

If anything, his conservative instincts will keep him from becoming too much of a megalomaniac in dealing with the average tax payer. He’ll tend to view himself as a servant of the people instead of their master. He may have to audit taxes or assess fees, but he will never look to be overly abusive in the process. They need to hire more conservatives actually, despite the inefficient
system. I’ll bet they get more money back(from delinquent taxpayers) in half the time while generating less animus amongst the tax payers they serve! And it will cost the government less at the same time!

So tell him to go for it, and to remember the parable about the servant who was to be released from the management of his master’s finances. This servant went to his master’s debtors and reduced all of their bills so that the master would get some return on what was owed him. The master commended him on this action for it allowed the servant to have gained favor from the folks he was going to need the most support from...as our Lord states”Make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous mammon, so that when you fail, you may be received into the everlasting habitations”

So tell him to be wise and go easy when he can, he’ll get more results then he would by becoming just another government hard-ass!

LOL. Unfortunately, that isn't the job description. The job is Large and Mid-Size Business (LMSB) Internal Revenue Agent.

You're not investigating government officials unfortunately.

More the better. We can’t individually be responsible for how the system got there, only to help steer in the right direction. Better to have conservatives doing the audits than marxists.

I am sure there were people who thought working for Hitler’s SS was an honor, too.

Like another poster said, I'd rather have this guy sitting at that desk rather than an Obamabot militia member. He could be a real asset.

Taxes are not the enemy, it is OVER TAXATION and the people who control the taxes that are. Government is a necessary Evil but when that Evil is not controlled by the people it will devour all!

Go to work for them IF he can tolerate the high likelihood that he may have to destroy people's lives or at least making Nightmares out of them. I'd make sure that GOOD Mental health coverage was supplied in the Benefit package. HE WILL need it.

The premise of the question is incomplete. The question has to extend to individuals as well as businesses since the IRS audits both. There have been plenty of horror stories of individual audits.

No problem. One year on the job and you will hold conservatives in utter contempt. Guaranteed. Take the job. Within a year conscience will no longer bother you. Count on it.

Take the job—Northern Virginia needs your conservative vote.

On a more serious note, I work for another federal agency. I was hired in Bush the Younger’s second term. When 0bama was elected, I seriously considered resigning.

People at the top of the government are evil. That doesn’t mean the government itself is evil. You will learn that what goes on in the Capitol and the White House are, essentially, theater, and for the most part has absolutely nothing to do with your job duties. In other words, politics and governing are largely separate.

Pray, and read the first chapter of Daniel. The best thing you can do is to perform your task honorably and faithfully. And remember, politicians come and go, but the bureaucracy is forever.

There are also cases where an audit ends up with more money back in the hands of the earner.

The current tax laws are the current tax laws, like it or not. I don’t see a problem with taking the job.

Yep. That pretty much covers it.

"Democracy means giving the people what they ask for -- and giving it to them good and hard." (source unknown)

Nations tend to get the kind of government they deserve, in God's providence. Until we acquire better character as a nation, we will not have better civil governments.

Your friend would be working with God as an agent of His scourge. As a man of integrity, he could still treat his victims with dignity.

A while back, I tried doing business as a Subchapter S corporation. The agency I found most helpful, and easiest to deal with was -- and I kid you not -- the I.R.S. The state unemployment gestapo, though, was so incompetent and heavy-handed that I disincorporated after a year rather than put up with their continuing harassment.
