A Nast-y Take on Governor Palin
National Review Online ^ | March 25, 2009 | Jim Geraghty

Joe McGinniss’s cover story in Conde Nast’s Portfolio on Gov. Sarah Palin is almost too well-researched to be dismissed as a hit piece. Over six pages, McGinniss, who covered Alaska’s oil boom in 1975, takes us deep into the world of the state’s oil-and-gas industry, the challenging terrain, the murky politics, and the Byzantine relationship between politics and big business. A reader who comes to the topic with no familiarity with the issue comes away more knowledgeable, and for that McGinniss deserves credit.

But the article’s argument doesn’t always mesh with the details. To many readers of Conde Nast’s other publications — The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, GQ — the Republican star Palin is, ipso facto, a villainess. Had Portfolio run a story that reads, “Palin’s gas-pipeline plan has an element of risk but could work,” some readers no doubt would have complained that a previously respectable business magazine had suddenly scrapped its credibility by serving up a puff piece about the Cruella de Vil of the liberal imagination. (The cover photo has Palin in the snow in a fur-collared jacket.) Instead, the Portfolio piece follows a simple tune: Whatever decisions Governor Palin makes about this massive, complicated project, she is always wrong.

Palin is accused simultaneously of

Unfortunately, how many average Americans read beyond the original article? How many actually seek out the truth or an opposing opinion?

It will be an uphill climb, but we must fight to dispel the false caricature that permeates the media.

Sounds like the last 6 years of media coverage for Bush. Bush was dumb for not fighting the media more. Bush let so many lies stick. I think Palin will fight back much better.

Oh this guy is definitely going to reach the masses with this peice! I mean Conde Nast is staple reading material among all my average friends and found on every coffee table in the U.S. This is just going to ruin Palin's chance of ever relating or being excepted by the average American. Poor woman doesn't have a chance !

I getcha — but I was referring to the situation in general. I won’t be surprised if more mainstream outlets use this as fodder, without bothering to check out the facts.

Despite the overwhelming odds, I am confident that Sarah will give it her all, and with our support she can break thru the facade!

What is happening to Sarah, can happen to any one of us that dares crosses the Dems. This is scary times, when I see what they are doing to her, reminds me of Communist Cuba or Iran and I never thought America would become either of those countries but it’s looking that way

I bought a pair of Sperry Topsider shoes online from Sperry. The next thing I knew, I was receiving copies of Conde` Nast magazine. I called them and said I didn't subscribe. They said Sperry gave me the subscription. I just gave them to my neighbor without unwrapping them.

Isn’t this Joe McGinnis the “crime” writer? The one who wrote The Selling of the President ( about Nixon in 1968 election)? Why would we read Conde Nast for anything of value? I mean that’s like thinking the (nearly) defunct Chronicle has something to say or the NYT.

I remember digging up and reading Joe McGuinness’ “Going to Extremes” a few years back. I thought it a classic about the Alaskan Boom Years and the wild and wooly characters that made up the place.

I haven’t read the Conde Nast article yet but it sounds like Joe is the one pathetically selling out here by playing the hired skunk stinking for gold. He’s no good at it because he’s too good a journalist and can’t bring himself to twist and ignore the facts deftly enough. So his self-contradictions stand out to the intelligent reader.

Alaska and Big Oil have indeed got a long and twisted history and Alaska’s politicos have routinely and usually correctly been described as being in Big Oil’s pocket. In contrast to her predecessor Murkowski, Sarah Palin comes off amazingly well; a politician, unafraid of playing hardball when necessary, taking on a long-range and risky project for the benefit of her state and working in the open without even the hint of requiring favors in return. A very rare thing these days. The more I learn of this, her signature issue, the more I like her.

And yes, unlike former President Noblesse Oblige, she is not too lofty and noble to hit back hard when someone’s bad-mouthing her.

Good on her.

Bad on Joe.
