Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. `Of course you don’t — till I tell you. I meant “there’s a nice knock-down argument for you!”’

`But “glory” doesn’t mean “a nice knock-down argument,”’ Alice objected.

`When _I_ use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’

`The question is,’ said Alice, `whether you CAN make words mean so many different things.’

`The question is,’ said Humpty Dumpty, `which is to be master - - that’s all.’

Alice was too much puzzled to say anything, so after a minute Humpty Dumpty began again. `They’ve a temper, some of them — particularly verbs, they’re the proudest — adjectives you can do anything with, but not verbs — however, _I_ can manage the whole of them! Impenetrability! That’s what _I_ say!’

`Would you tell me, please,’ said Alice `what that means?`

`Now you talk like a reasonable child,’ said Humpty Dumpty, looking very much pleased. `I meant by “impenetrability” that we’ve had enough of that subject, and it would be just as well if you’d mention what you mean to do next, as I suppose you don’t mean to stop here all the rest of your life.’

`That’s a great deal to make one word mean,’ Alice said in a thoughtful tone.

`When I make a word do a lot of work like that,’ said Humpty Dumpty, `I always pay it extra.’

Liberi ("the free ones") can mean "children." Liber Secundus could *possibly* mean "The Second Free One" but a more likely possibility is "The Second Book."

Ego venit , ego posteri , ego eram zotted. Looks like very bad Latin to me. Venit means "he/she/it has come." It can also be present tense. "I have come" would be Veni. The Ego is not necessary.

posteri -- "the ones after." It could be "descendants."

ego eram zotted. -- apparently what was meant is "I was zotted."

De Principiis Cogitandi. Liber Secundus. On the principals of thinking. Book Two. (Many book titles begin with De. There was Caesar's De Bello Gallico; Lucretius' De Rerum Natura, and many others. Actually Caesar's title was probably longer but that's the short title.

Visa tamen tardi demum inclementia morbi Hmmm...looks like "nevertheless the harshness of slow illness has been seen, finally." That doesn't seem to quite fit with the first part though.

Luna habitabilis. Visa tibi ante oculos, et nota major imago. "The inhabitable moon. Things seen unto you before your eyes, and a larger image has been noted."

“Visa” could also be feminine singular rather than neuter plural — thereby modifying “Luna” -— moon.

Okay, folks. I need your help here. Back in March we did Finnish, and I wound up in Helsinki. Mrs. Sionnsar would like to see Rome again (and show it to me for the first time), so this month we're doing Latin. Ouday ouyay atinlay eakspay? How do you say "beer" in Latin?

Hmm. I never learned how to say “beer” in latin, but in honor of the Flu Formerly Known As Swine I can say “Manus manum lavat”.

That and “elepantus non capit murem”.

That’s it for my seventh grade latin class.

How do you say “beer” in Latin?

How do you say “we made wine from barley and hops”, in Latin?

That’s where the answer to this and other age old questions could be found.

"You mean I missed out on a Zot today?"

You may have, but not this one. This goes back a couple of weeks and more. I'm always looking for next month's home, and one of the several non-absolute criteria (I've broken every one) is that it should be from the previous month.

Only once, I think, have I used a same-day Zot (and it may have been a day-before Zot). I don't like those because it's hard to get all the links correct when the destination post number keeps changing.

“cerevisia” - compare Spanish “cerveza” and French “cervoise.”

I saw, I posted, I was zotted?

Close, but it's not right. "Ego" is not necessary here. You could do most of it with:

Veni, posteri, (? eram zotted ?)
My Latin-English dictionary is at work. Why it's at work I don't know, except maybe to keep the "Teach Yourself Gaelic" book company on the bookshelf. I rarely have visitors in my office so it's not there for show. All I know is that it's been there since about, oh, 1995 (before I started Gaelic class) and hasn't been opened anytime since 2000.

"Back in March we did Finnish, and I wound up in Helsinki. Mrs. Sionnsar would like to see Rome again (and show it to me for the first time), so this month we're doing Latin."

Something you may not be considering; in modern-day Rome, they don't typically speak Latin.

So if you get to go somewhere as a result of having selected this thread, it could be a trip through time.

This may not be an entirely bad thing. If you do find yourself in ancient Rome, please deposit five dollars or so in an interest-bearing account for me. I'll pay you back next month.

Seems good. But the tradition of drinking the local beers is getting old, esp. when revisiting the same locales over again. I think a change is called for — next time I visit Finland I will try the local wines!
