More Americans “Pro-Life” Than “Pro-Choice”

GALLUP: Most Americans now 'pro-life'...

A new Gallup Poll, conducted May 7-10, finds 51% of Americans calling themselves "pro-life" on the issue of abortion and 42% "pro-choice." This is the first time a majority of U.S. adults have identified themselves as pro-life since Gallup began asking this question in 1995.(...)

Americans' recent shift toward the pro-life position is confirmed in two other surveys. The same three abortion questions asked on the Gallup Values and Beliefs survey were included in Gallup Poll Daily tracking from May 12-13, with nearly identical results, including a 50% to 43% pro-life versus pro-choice split on the self-identification question.

Additionally, a recent national survey by the Pew Research Center recorded an eight percentage-point decline since last August in those saying abortion should be legal in all or most cases, from 54% to 46%. The percentage saying abortion should be legal in only a few or no cases increased from 41% to 44% over the same period. As a result, support for the two broad positions is now about even, sharply different from most polling on this question since 1995, when the majority has typically favored legality.

Republicans Move to the Right

The source of the shift in abortion views is clear in the Gallup Values and Beliefs survey. The percentage of Republicans (including independents who lean Republican) calling themselves "pro-life" rose by 10 points over the past year, from 60% to 70%, while there has been essentially no change in the views of Democrats and Democratic leaners.

Similarly, by ideology, all of the increase in pro-life sentiment is seen among self-identified conservatives and moderates; the abortion views of political liberals have not changed.(...)

Bottom Line

With the first pro-choice president in eight years already making changes to the nation's policies on funding abortion overseas, expressing his support for the Freedom of Choice Act, and moving toward rescinding federal job protections for medical workers who refuse to participate in abortion procedures, Americans -- and, in particular, Republicans -- seem to be taking a step back from the pro-choice position. However, the retreat is evident among political moderates as well as conservatives.

It is possible that, through his abortion policies, Obama has pushed the public's understanding of what it means to be "pro-choice" slightly to the left, politically. While Democrats may support that, as they generally support everything Obama is doing as president, it may be driving others in the opposite direction.

I think Gallup's analysis is spot on. When people see "pro-choice" in action, they realize it isn't as PC as they thought. They realize it isn't a freedom, it is taking away freedom from a baby that can't speak for themselves.

But see, the GOP needs to recruit more moderate candidates who will be more reasonable and liberal on social issues, since that’s what people obviously want.

/do I need it?

This is why the GOP must abandon their opposition to abortion and gay marriage, because these are obviously radical position that is only supported by a majority of Americans....Obviously very unpopular and divisive position of a small voting block which could influence a small minority to keep voting for Democrats.

Intensity is actually the biggest piece of any opinion puzzle.
The “prolife increment” has always existed, in every race.
Basically, the people who vote BASED ON ABORTION ALONE, are more prolife than prochoice.
This can be a 1% to 7% advantage, in most elections, for the prolife candidate.

Another point:

I realize that the ALL, March for Life, Operation Rescue folks want to push the “no exceptions no compromise” position -—

But that is DUMB, politically!

We need to pass laws that make the abortion practice less profitable.

We need to pass laws that require more paperwork, more reporting and more PR problems, for the abortion business.

We need to restrict and prohibit late term abortions -— and here is where the prolife purists need to grow up!

There is NOTHING immoral or wrong about making late term abortion completely illegal -— but the radical prolifers will not allow such legislation, the radicals side with George Tiller, on this issue! “NO EXCEPTIONS, NO COMPROMISE,” means “NO PROGRESS”!!

Lets bankrupt the abortion industry by taking away the MOST PROFITABLE thing they do: LATE TERM ABORTIONS!

Indeed, the dunces that run the GOP were blaming pro-lifers for the election debacle when it the country has been shifting a pro-life direction for years. It is prime issue to attract both younger voters, Hispanics and Catholics, groups the GOP needs to ever become a majority party again.

Yet, wish-washy conservatives like Jeff Sessions have no problem sitting back and letting Obama push through pro-abortion judges without opposition.

This is huge news. It won’t be widely reported, so pro-lifers need to get the word out. Email Hannity, Beck and everyone else in the media and demand that they report this good news.
