Well there could be all kind of threats on the way.

A man holds a sign as President Barack Obama's
motorcade heads to a town hall on health care reform, Wednesday, July 29, 2009, near a supermarket in Bristol, Va

Could have been an assault poster.

Are there pictures? we need to know more about what goes on in the “minds” of the president and his minions. Do they so hate, fear and mistrust the public that they are ready to shoot them?
Are they expecting disturbances in the streets and are they planning to mow normal people down?

NO that is NOT standard protocol. I’m not sure what and where you recieved your protective detail training, but the Secret Service are not supposed to draw their weapons unless there is a credible threat. A simple protest is NOT a credible threat.

If you blow up the photo (400x), the lead SUV looks like there is a firearm pointed out the window from the backseat. I will admit it is hard to tell. but something breaks the line of the front door jam and looks like a hand handing the front end of a rifle.

Anybody else have the software to clean up the image

The agents IN presidential motorcades have never openly carried weapons (and definitely never pointed them at crowds) as far back as I can remember.

I did see snipers placed/hideen in various places around town when Clinton visited Culpeper on his “Thomas Jefferson” route to the white house, but the agents near him and in his motorcade had their weapons discreetly concealed.

Having openly armed “guards” around the U.S. president inside the U.S. would be a new development as far as my memory serves me.

what a ridiculous headline. these guys ride with their windows open and weapons at the ready. yes, those scary black guns being carried by guy in suits and sunglasses are scary...they are supposed to be.

You're neglecting one important point....we live in the United States. We don't live in some tinpot little Third World dictatorship where the Presidential Guard has to be "scary." I was at one of Palin's rallies in Raleigh back during the election, and while it was obvious who the Secret Service agents were and they'd be ready at a moment's notice to protect her, you didn't see guns, you didn't see evidence that they were "covering" the crowd - even though Palin and her guards were in a tactically much more "difficult" position - several thousand people packed into a dark, enclosed arena, people literally a couple of feet from the stage, shaking her hand and getting autographs after her speech, etc.

Sorry, but we don't live in a military dictatorship. If you're cool with this kind of stuff, then I would suggest that you're in the wrong country. Maybe Cuba or Belarus might be more your style.

You’re showing yourself to be making things up. It is NOT SOP. The Secret Service does not work on show of force. And YES, I’m a former federal agent and HAVE really worked with the FBI and Secret Service.

I’d like to see some photos, too.

Even as wacky and narcissistic as the Obamessiah is, I find it difficult to believe that he had his secret service agents point “black rifles” AT a crowd. Even if the weapons were openly displayed (which I find a little weird in and of itself), I suspect they were pointed “up” (or in some other “safe” direction away from people).

Of course, things might be even worse than I have been imagining...

One more thing...

scary black guns being carried by guy in suits and sunglasses are scary...they are supposed to be.

Can you explain why we are supposed to be afraid when the president is visiting?

Spoke with a friend who is in the technical security division of the Secret Service and he said this is not the standard protocol for motorcade protection details. I am going to send him more info so he has more details...

IMHO, the Prez is afraid of his own people, although I don't know why (sarc). I've never seen Secret Service in the immediate vicinity of the President with weapons drawn. Usually the only weapons you will see are discreetly in the hands of snipers...at least the snipers they WANT you to see. ;)

as we all know, i am NYPD. i worked the Republican National Convention in 2004 and have worked a few UN General Assembly's.

nothing major. uniformed presence. on more than one occasion i was passed by Bush's motorcade during these events. the SUV's that followed always had their windows open. agents could be seen with rifle stocks up against their shoulders.

when they exited the vehicle, their jackets would hide most of the rifles, but the black shoulder strap cutting across their sternum was clearly visible. these were the agents walking next to the president.

when obama came for his little date night in NYC, it was the same thing, although i only saw the motorcade as it passed me.

I've seen the uzis in the windows and tailgate windows of the black SUVs that the Secret Service uses more than a few times. I saw it when Clinton was POTUS, when Bush was POTUS and I am not surprised at all that they continue the practice.

I think this is mountain-molehill time.

I agree on this one.

I was there at the Bristol event and there were a lot of people there.

From what I can glean, this is SOP for them to have a ready response team for any president.

If I’m wrong anyone, feel free to correct me of course.

Either the laughable contorted faced (fruits of isus) or the nBP putting Whitey on notice not to diss their main squeeze.

Yesterday while visiting a sick friend in the hospital I saw a you street thug(domestic terrorist) sporting a blue in color tee shirt with the wording,” The Turnaround Begins Now!” So White America beware,”Lions, Tigers and Bears. Oh My!!!

YOU are not supposed to be afraid since you would never take any action against a sitting president. you, actually, are supposed to be comforted by these guys. they are the best in the business.

the bad guys, however, need to be deterred or killed. and no, i am not talking about peaceful protestors. i am talking about actual bad guys.

What you’re describing is different than what the original post described. The point of the protective detail is NOT to be scary, but to be diligent ready. Big difference. Running around with weapons drawn is not the way the Secret Service works.

(no, we don’t ALL know you’re NYPD ... I’m former AFOSI)
