No one will ever compile a top ten list that everyone will agree with. The subjective criteria used here is based on price, range required, caliber required, history of use and reliablity, and commonness of ammunition, not necessarily in that order. This is not to suggest that a person needs every gun listed.
A large caliber rifle, .22 rifle or pistol, 9mm or .45, and pump shotgun are the basics. There will be lots of other opinions, but here is my list that I came up with after 50 years of shooting… not necessarily ranked in order.
1. We know that the first choice here will be controversial. A good AK47 is practically indestructible. Taking much of its design from the best points late WWII German MP44, the AK47 usually functions flawlessly under the worst of conditions. Throw it in the mud, fill the receiver with muck, or just leave it in a muddy river for weeks like the Viet Cong hid them, and all you need to do is wash it out, lubricate it, load it, and you are ready to go. In worst conditions, you could probably even urinate on it to clean out the muck. It is not the most accurate rifle available due to the loose manufacturing tolerances used. You can count on 3 inches at 100 yards. But, these loose tolerances allow the rifle to function and feed, and for the parts to move in almost all weather and geographical conditions. Its hard to freeze up an AK47. The 7.62X39 intermediate round is smaller than .308 or 30.06, and is comparable to a 30-30. 10, 20, 30, 40, 75 round magazines are plentiful. 75 round drums can be had for about $255.00, but they are bulky to carry and use with a semiautomatic AK47. Here in East TN we believe in havin’ a pistol and a rifle in same caliber so one size ammo fits all. I prefer .357 ... but i sold near all my toys to a guy whose name I can’t remeber, from out Memphis way. Isn’t the fed gonna protect us all?

3. 45ACP handgun (take your pick of quality makes -- I have 4 of different makes) but I'd probably choose a Sig.

Well, since you did it, I’d guess it’s only fair.
1) Remington 870 / Mossberg 500: The Mossberg has a removable choke tube, while the Remington doesn’t. If you get a “sporting” version, you get the dimples that Remington puts in there so you can’t easily install a magazine extension. They serve no purpose from what I or anybody else can tell other than to keep the gun from being “scary.” In any case, this is well-known.
2) Glock 17: It’s nearly indestructible, and it fires the ubiquitous 9mm round. They’re also pretty accurate. +P is available for greater stopping power. Portability is also a concern.
3) Mini-14: It shoots readily available 5.56/.223 ammunition and, barring a major malfunction, goes bang every time. It’s not as accurate as an AR-15, though they have made significant strides recently.
4) Ruger M77 Hawkeye, .308: It’s cheaper than a comparable Remington 700 BDL and just as accurate.
5) Remington 597: This rifle is, in my opinion, much better than the Ruger 10/22. The 597 has the heft and feel of a much larger rifle. In other words, it doesn’t feel like a toy. It’s very accurate, and the magazines are much easier to load and release. It’s also cheaper than the 10/22.
6) DPMS LR-308: It’s an extremely accurate semi-automatic AR-10 that shoots the same ammunition as the aforementioned Hawkeye. Once the barrel is broken in, it can be cleaned quickly and easily. Depending on the length of the barrel, it’s accurate from 600 yards and out.
The next four I’d have to think about.

My 3 1/2 inch 870 jams all the time. I’m very dissapointed with Remington in it’s design.....

I didn’t see any reference to a gun that I have. I didn’t buy it for any particular reason, just wanted one.
It’s an M1 Carbine, made in 1944.
It seems to me that with a 20-round magazine (you can even buy 30-rd. mags for it), this would be a decent rifle for defensive purposes. What say thou?
First and most important is a .22 rifle which is accurate and can be reloaded from a small or large capacity mag. You might have to try several 10/22’s before you find a real accurate one. Then find a high quality high capacity mag for it. Anything over 19 rounds is OK but I would rather have 50.
Next a .22 pistol small enough to conceal but accurate enough for informal target shooting or hunting. A good choice would be a Walther PP if you find a reliable one. Some are not totally reliable but just about all of them are accurate.
Another possibility would be one of the Beretta model 70 series .22’s. they are both accurate and reliable and weigh less than the Walthers.
Next you need a real stopper for those odd times when you might have to shoot through automobiles. Something like a .338 Lapua on a Sako action.
Then a powerful accurate rifle for which ammo is available everywhere. A pre-64 Winchester 70 or one of the later ones which have the Mauser extractor and controlled round feeding..
For shotguns you need a Remington 1187 with the short barrel but still with chokes and high capacity mag.. An 870 will do nearly as well.. Also a short barreled side by side double in 12 gauge.
A Smith & Wesson model 29 with 6 inch barrel, and another model 29 with an 8 3/8 inch barrel. The old ones with blue finish and no underlug.
A SigSauer P226 and a bunch of mags. A Colt M1911 with nothing done to it except maybe better sights. Also a Browning Hi-Power preferably an older one or an Argentine one.
A Ruger .22/.22 mag with a six inch barrel. A Kimber .22 bolt action for those precision shots at short ranges. An Anschutz would do as well.
An old 10 gauge single barrel with improved cylinder when you are just mucking around and don’t want to appear suspicious.
I would also like a S&W model 19 for .38, .357, .38 Long or short Colt. I would prefer a 6 inch barrel.
And last of all, a like new 6.5 Swedish Mauser with beat up looking stock and Redfield receiver sight and front sight blade replaced with a sourdough blade.
Lots more but that is enough for now.
If you must carry, carry the weapon that you’re the most proficient with. I am not proficient with an AK47. I am an expert with an AR15. I will carry the AR15.
Glock —
If you have to have a semi-auto, glocks rule. 37 parts, easily gunsmithed by anyone with even a smidgen of mechanical skill, most popular semi-auto in history so lots of spare parts, and they run forever.
I couldn’t afford to feed that thing, and 18 barrels to clean...nevertheless, I would give it a good home out of charity.
I always advise new gun owners to get a revolver. That way they won’t shoot themselves in the thigh or get confused. They always work.

Two days ago, my G+A came with an article on S+W ‘N’ frame revolvers. Big and handy when the time is right.If it failed, you could use it as an effective smackdown device.
I currently have all of them with the exception of #9 and #10. I do have my eyes on the Springfield EMP to fill the gap for #9. I have asked Santa for a Barrett in .50 cal many times. He still hasn’t come through.

I have an Ithica M-37 M&P. IMHO, it is the most reliable pump shotgun of all time.
If I had the choice of only one gun, it would be an M-1 Garand.
