How many times have I as a libertarian-minded advocate for individual liberty and free markets been in an argument with liberals, progressives, statists, whatever you choose to name them, and heard that my ideology is too simplistic, too impractical, etc.? Of course, these are the nice versions of what usually comes out of their collective mouths: idiot, fascist, racist, hick, redneck, and the glorious list of intellectual vocabulary marches on and on into pure brilliance. Oftentimes the liberal progressive breaks out into über-intellectual speak as illustrated in the following clip:

We certainly have our place and I would say our goal is to attain "goodness".
And that's attached to morality...and morality is really common sense...You don't kill babies in the womb.
You’re confused Mr. Anarchydeluxe (is that ever an appropriate name for a libertarian), as “ liberals, progressives, statists, whatever you choose to name them” (I call them what they are: “atheists”) follow the same social policies libertarians do: pro abortion, pro homosexuality, pro open borders, pro legalization of drugs, just to name a few.
When it comes to your free market ideals (cha ching, $ is what it’s all about right?), that is where you differ.
"An idea so stupid, only an intellectual would conceive of it."
Morality comes from common sense?
I guess I would agree. There is a book that describes “common sense”: It’s called “The Holy Bible”.
It’s “common sense” writings aren’t subjected to man’s whims, (what was common sense yesterday for man, might not be common sense for him tomorrow...it’s called “moral relativism”).
That’s the problem with libertarianism, it doesn’t base morals on the truths that never change: God’s laws.
I just read some excellent excerpts from Thomas Sowell’s new book, Intellectuals and Society. It addresses this matter. Looks like a great read - I’m afraid I may have to break down and buy it!
College can broaden one's mind by opening new avenues of inquiry and interest, without a person's character being changed. Unfortunately, many young people go into college, and become indoctrinated by leftist, elitist professors, and come out sneering at everyone who doesn't share their particular worldview. In those cases, a higher education didn't do a thing for them, because that's just as juvenile an attitude as they had when they entered the college.
Me too.
Isn’t it amazing how an âuneducated, redneck snowbillyâ like Sarah Palin consistently outsmarts the âeducated classâ elitists?
It’s not confusion from my end. You are right that atheism is often connected to statism, but not always. There are Christian socialists all over the world. In fact, religion and state has been the history of the world till recently. And they were also brutal tyrannies. However, the common denominator is people who think they can run our lives better than we can.
Libertarians are not pro-abortion. In fact, they are pretty split on the issue. It all depends on the status of the fetus. I, for one, am anti-abortion. For me there is no justification for violating the rights of the unborn.
No libertarian is pro-homosexuality. We simply believe that it is not something the state should regulate, and that includes marriage. There is simply no reason for the state to regulate that. Whatever your personal beliefs are and whether you want to be for it or against it is your private business, but you can disagree and advocate for state intrusion. We ran from tyrants who tried to regulate our private beliefs once. Besides, you can have all the anti-homosexual private meetings and ad campaigns you want. I support free speech.
Do you wonder why libertarians support open borders and the legalization of drugs? It is called free trade and free markets. You can’t say you’re for a free market and then have massive exceptions to it. That’s what leads to this massive progressive state we have now, and that is exactly what liberals do. Besides, it’s not like libertarians are saying go use drugs. We advocate against it, but we believe it should be our choice. Plus, the war on drugs is a massive failure. You can’t kill supply. You can only work on lowering demand. Private markets do that better. As for borders, it destroys wealth and free trade, but there is a good argument for the rule of law and national security (though feebler than rule of law) to which I am open.
Oh, and anarchy is a play on the misconceptions of libertarianism. We believe in a private order just like Adam Smith and many of our founding fathers, just not top-down, gov’t-run order.
It’s not all about $. It’s about having the right to choose your own destiny and live by your own values, not values imposed upon you by bureaucrats, private citizens, or anyone. There are lots of socially conservative libertarians.
This should be on the list also.
“Obama is so stupid, only an intellectual would approve of him.”
There are Christian socialists all over the world
An oxymoron if there ever was one (kinda like saying that someone is a "pro-life abortionist"). True Christians know that socialism and God's laws don't mix.

"In fact, religion and state has been the history of the world till recently"
Somewhat "recently", the religion of atheism has been responsible for the brutal murders of 100 to 200 million innocent human beings in the name of communism. (And no, Hitler was NOT a "Christian").
People have come to the US from all over the world, often times leaving everything behind, because of what our "Christian nation" offered.

"Libertarians are not pro-abortion"..."No libertarian is pro-homosexuality".
You better check the platform of the party who uses the same name as you use to describe your political ideology:

If you don't believe that there should be laws against certain immoral behavior, you are in essence, supporting that immoral behavior.
"We simply believe that it is not something the state should regulate, and that includes marriage."
The state has a "vested interest" in the nuclear family. The institution of marriage is essential for society. Re-defining it to include anyone that professes "love" for who or "what is that thing???" will be detrimental to our society. The same goes for laws regarding decency; the state has a vested interest.
"Do you wonder why libertarians support open borders and the legalization of drugs? It is called free trade and free markets."
It's called ruining lives through immoral behavior (Have you EVER heard anyone say "Boy, I'm sure glad my husband/son/brother etc. became a drug addict!"?) and giving away our sovereign rights (don't tell me NAFTA and all those so-called "free trade agreements" are fair).
"There are lots of socially conservative libertarians."
Again, an oxymoron. If you believe in God and His laws (which espouse decency, life and economically the free market), you're a conservative. Nothing libertarian about it.
