I was reading dating advice for women from men at Cosmo and came across a rather amusing letter to "the guy guru who answers your most pressing sex and love questions." The letter is from a woman who is upset that a guy used a coupon to buy her dinner:
I went out for dinner with this guy, and it was great — we got along well, and there was a definite spark. But when it came time to pay, he pulled out a coupon. I'm hardly a princess, but that totally killed it for me. Am I being too hard on him?
It was unquestionably a boneheaded maneuver on his part, but yes, cutting him loose on that one faux pas sounds extreme. There are factors to weigh. For one, how old is the dude? If he's still in school or graduated recently, it could just be that he hasn't dated a lot and was short on funds — the economy isn't exactly booming right now. And to be fair, he didn't ask you to go dutch, so he did still take you out to dinner.
If he's older and financially stable, then you have more reason to be turned off. Any guy with a little experience should know that you don't flash coupons on a first date — you bide your time till the chick is in the bathroom, then feverishly shove it into the waiter's hand! In all seriousness, it could be a sign that he'd turn out to be a cheapskate.
I only wish I knew about coupons when I was dating. I would have used them on EVERY date. If they didn't like it, well, they would then have to WALK home.
On Valentine's Day I took my wife to dinner at Ruby Tuesday's. Total bill was 50 bucks. I used a free entree coupon to knock 15 bucks off the total bill and then paid for the rest with one of my infamous "stealth coupons" (don't ask, research). Total cost to me: $0.00 and I was still able to tip the waiter $15.
BTW, PJ is now just 10 coupons away from buying a FREE laptop computer.
personally, I think he’s a keeper, he shows good fiscal common sense.
I hope that dude knows she was insulted- next time he can use his coupon to treat someone who would appreciate the favor

She was not worthy enough to be with the man. He should consider himself lucky that he was spared any future frustration from being involved with this poor excuse for a woman. And women wonder why guys are so difficult to understand? PAAAALLLEEEEZZZZZz

Yep! She might as well have started her letter out with , “I consider myself a high-maintenance b!7c4.”
Just as much fun as getting FREE stuff is the fun involve in figuring out how to get the FREE stuff via coupons. It's like solving a combination crossword puzzle/chess game.
Damn right. Kick her to the curb and find someone more appreciative. That is only a sign of nagging and bitching to come.
Sounds like the guy got lucky. If someone is this petty, who wants to continue seeing them.
It wouldn’t have bothered me. I probably would have been impressed.
Well, since I am what people would refer to as a “coupon queen”, I would find that man very attractive. A coupon is money and I’m all about someone who wants to save money.
My husband supports my coupon “habit” wholeheartedly.

Dunno, mixed feelings about this one.
Would I dump a gal for using a coupon to get me a gift? No.
However, I’d want her to think I’m a good provider. If I’m going to take her out then I’m going to pay and show her a good time.

And a guy who uses a coupon is the type a woman ought to select since he is careful with his money, even when he is graciously spending it on her! A woman who doesn't appreciate that isn't worhty of lifetime maintenance.
Heck, if I had thought about this I would have done it to weed out irresponsible, spoiled princesses.

Calling anyone a cheapskate in today’s economy is just nuts. I’d suspect anyone who had money to throw away of being a democrat.
I like to be taken out to dinner. I expect to reciprocate with a home-cooked meal, though.
Now if he stiffed the waiter on the tip, that's a whole other story.
