Yea right.

A Social Security number is voluntary, not required to work, not required to be issued, not to be used as identification.

But strangely unless I have a cash job under the table or am self employed, I'm required to provide my social security number. Can't file personal taxes without your social security number (IRS calls to get it I found out first hand). The bank won't let me open an account without it. And when my daughter was born the hospital would not let us leave till we applied for a social security number.

I've been required to provide my social security number for countless of things that it was never intended to be used for.

But you can’t use it for ID. Ever wondered about that? You have to have it to get a Driver’s License but you can’t use it for ID. We can not take your birth certificate or SS card for ID but we can take your Driver’s License that you got with the other forms.
