When the United States Federal government is functioning correctly, there is no need for civil disobedience. Our disagreements can be settled in the courts, or by legislation if necessary. Legislation is meant to be representative of the public will.
So what happens when legislation is not representing the peoples will? What if our legislators ignore the very people they work for, and violate the Constitution itself? What if they pass a law which requires the people to fund something with their taxes which they morally oppose, or requires the people to purchase a private good or face jail time?
The answer is civil disobedience. We do not have to follow unjust laws. The ability to govern rests on the consent of the governed, and if our legislators violate that consent by acting against our will we are not obligated to follow their law.
Show your dissatisfaction with the federal governments unconstitutional and unjust attempt at passing health care legislation by taking the Non-Compliance Pledge below. Now that this illegal bill has passed, you can go one step further then simply airing your frustration. You reject the very law itself and consider it invalid, and will have publicly acknowledged this fact. The time to tacitly support the unjust actions of our federal government are over.
Take the Non-Compliance Pledge here.
The Non-Compliance Pledge
I do not recognize the right of our legislators to pass laws against the peoples will.
I do not give my consent to be governed to those who would act against our interests.
I do pledge that I will not comply with unjust Federal legislation.
Signed,
"I understand, support and presently exercise my rights under the second amendment"
'I do pledge' sounds like it was written by someone in 8th Grade and added 'any' because this *thing* 'ain't' over.
I no longer file or pay taxes. I do so willingly and with the desire to be arrested and go to jail. I wish 100 million more like me. Nonviolent resistance.
