It is always good to diversify your ammo so going with a 5.45 is a good option.

Also, what many military folks forget (and yes I am prior military too) is that there are different guns for different battles. For instance, I would not want to use a 7.62 to clear a house or school that contains innocents because that 7.62 round will probably go thru the bad guy, the wall, and anyone on the other side of the wall, and just keep going. However, for combat taking place over distance or in the open, the 7.62 is great. Defeating body armor is alo a consideration when chosing a weapon. You have to use the right weapon for the right situation so diversification is great.

I agree except someone with an AR can hit someone with an AK before the person is within the effective range of their weapon. At 600 yards I can hit a target I can’t get close to using my neighbor’s AK. Also I can carry more rounds of 5.56 than I can of 7.62.

I was going to get an AK until my buddy’s son who is a retired SEAL told me to get the AR.

My neighbor now owns both and I may buy an AK at some point if I run into trouble getting ammo.

shot one a few years ago, but not this current one. Nice shooter and has the friendly AK guts.
It’s a very smooth shot and the ammo is dirt cheap, which is always good.
Can’t speak much for the ballistics of the round but it is fun gun to shoot. I think this place or another like Classic Arms, AIM Surplus or JG Sales has a beauty a few months back for $399.. I regret not grabbing it.

Happy shooting.

I agree with you that the AR is much more accurate than the AK, but I wanted to let you know that there is an “after-market” part that enables you to move the rear sight on the AK, closer to the buttstock, thus making the AK much more accurate than it currently is with the forward rear sight. The part runs about $115 last time I checked.

The AK-74 is a fine weapon. I personally prefer the Polish Tantal rebuilt by Central Arms. Make sure you go with one of the more recent builds as some of the older builds had barrels that weren’t that great.

You can by 5.45 and its one of the cheapest rounds on the market right now. You can get about 1000 Wolf Ammo rounds for about $250 from online sources. You can buy old mil surplus for cheaper but it is corrosive.

I plan to buy Wolf for target and acclamation shooting and a 'spam can' of Russia surplus for SHTF

Good plan. It isn’t corrosive to the spam can...lol. Both are corrosive to targets ;-)

"Both are corrosive to targets"

That's what I figured. Beside if SHTF I'll have plenty of time for rifle cleaning. And if 1080 rds. don't work to kep me a live through SHTF 2000 or even 5000 isn't either. I am not Mad Max, Eli or Jed from Red Dawn. ;-)

I advocate the AK for a simple reason: they are nearly impossible to break. If you have the cash, buy both.

Yes, if you have the money, get a semi.

But for the price of a GOOD AR, I could equip 6 marksmen with Mosins.

Quantity has a quality all it’s own. And a big honking bullet never hurts when you want to reach out and. . .double tap. . .someone. . . (evil grin). It’s just slower with a Mosin.

My criteria for a fallback weapon: simple, reliable, and cheap enough to stock a few of them. . .

a lot of statists get extra holes in them.

But 5.56 doesn't begin to compete with the folly of the 5.7x25 for the Five-seveN and the PS90. I love the PS90 [/s], twelve million rounds of (almost) 22 Hornet. It's usually a clue you have a sucky round when you need a brazilian of them. FAL forever!

????ICBM????Realy?

the bolt action rifle is a hunting rifle....and if I needed a bolt action battle rifle it would be a 8mm Mauser or a .30-06 1903A3....but I prefer the .30-06 M1 Garand or 7.62X51 M-14 or FNFAL. Now these are REAL battle rifles....

I’m with you on the FAL and M1. Don’t have any personal experience with the Mosin but just poking some fun at it’s reputation.

You can get an AR-15 upper in 5.45x39 and have the best of both worlds, a more accurate firearm and the ability to use less expensive ammo.

You can also get an AR upper in 7.62x39. I have one and love it.

Good points, but I’d still rather equip them with six SKS rifles. Firepower, even with the fixed 10rnd magazines, and a cartridge that is much more manageable from the standing and kneeling position.

During WWII, soldiers had to be completely retrained on the M1 Garand. They were taking their time, waiting for that perfect shot when it never presented itself. They had to be retrained to provide a volume of fire in support of maneuver.

To each their own. I can buy 2, and on a good day, 3 Mosins for the price of a single SKS.
