The republic was in existence scarcely more than a week before the U.S. Army, led by Frémont, took over on June 23. The simple fact is that there were probably no more than 10,000 people in the entire southwest at the beginning of the mexican American war and nearly every last one of them happily swore allegiance to the USA because mexico simply left them here as placeholders and basically forgot about them.
