Education secretary calls for 12-hour school days, longer school year
daily caller ^ | 7/28/10 | Paul Conner

If Education Secretary Arne Duncan has his way, kids would be spending a lot more time at school — and a three-month summer would be a thing of the past.

Duncan joked with attendees at a luncheon at the National Press Club Tuesday in Washington that he would like schools to stay open 13 months out of the year. Then he told the audience of over 100 that he seriously supports longer school hours.

“In all seriousness, I think schools should be open 12, 13, 14 hours a day, seven days a week, 11-12 months of the year,” Duncan said. “This is not just more of the same. There would be a whole variety of after-school programs. Obviously academics would be at the heart of that. But you top it off with dancing, art, drama, music, yearbook, robotics , activities for older siblings and parents, ESL classes.”

And they still won’t get as good of results as home educators who spend 2-3 hours a day.

Why not just youth camps? No one's ever done that one before...

This man is a true menace.

I can only hope his ideas go nowhere. Kids need a life.

They have all their lives to work 50 weeks of the year.

"Education Secretary Arne Duncan has his way, kids would be spending a lot more time at school "

This is just a scam to get more tax payer $$$ in the hands of the teachers and their unions. Spending more time in a classroom with incompetent teachers will not get you a better educated child.

It would be better to keep your child home and away from these 'educators'.

Next Big Brother will be taking American children away from their parents so the NEA can raise and brainwash them to be obedient Liberals.

They will get a much better result from their perspective. It is the equivalent of the govt saying they will handle the indoctrination of your child and will send them home to sleep. It’s a nightmarish scenario.

The teachers won't spend more time in the classroom. There would just be more of them. The ones who work the late shift will get time and a half like every union employee.

Starting to love this guy Arne yet?

They already have 4 yr old kindergarten by us, working on 3K. Thanks to Hillary and her It takes a village to raise a child crap. They want them from cradle to grave. Turn them into illerate zombies who can’t think for themselves.

Wonder how long it will be before they outlaw homeschooling.
