Oversimplified. Equally pithy but far wiser are “Ya gotta serve something” and “if you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for anything.” Attempts to “serve self” ultimately fall into the aimless trap of circular logic.

Governments, at their ideal, are intended to be faithful servants of a Creator. But because all men commit sins, even governments fail at that task. The American system of government is engineered for a people who are themselves conscientious towards their Creator, the idea being that the aggregation of the will of large numbers of people will cancel out individual mistakes. It fails miserably when placed upon a largely atheistic and agnostic people.

Children are always told they have to share with others. I never knew why, now I do. I didn't want to HAVE to share and I didn't expect anyone else to HAVE to share with me.
