Darpa awards contract to create a cheetah robot that is faster than the fastest human alive.

On Friday, Boston Dynamics has announced that the United States Department of Defense's research agency, DARPA, has awarded them a contract to build a new four-legged robot that will be fast enough to chase, evade, and hunt down the fastest human.

This reminds me of the robotic police dogs used in Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451”. In the book they chase you down and leap with a drug filled syringe loaded in their nose.

While certainly a fearsome prospect, I think it’s going to be a long, long time before something like this would have the situational awareness of a real feline. Furthermore, this will be programmed or piloted by humans who think like humans and would have it’s inherent vulnerabilities.
