A year ago The Ready Store was kind enough to provide a discount code for FREEPERS that are preparing.

Matt over at The Ready Store has come through again and provide a 10% discount code good until April 30th 2011.

Of course if they are overwhelmed they may adjust the promotion code.

No one connected with Free Republic makes anything of this promotion. This is a discount program for FREEPERS provided by The Ready Store.

I highly recommend the site. The products are well thought out and their customer service is outstanding.

The coupon code (applied at checkout) is: FR041110.

If you have any questions please feel free to PM me.

I have taken a multi-stage approach to our preparations.

We have “short-term” products like canned goods and frozen items. Things that have 1 year or less shelf-life and more or less the things we currently use. We have planned for at least 1 month of product. In that realm we have also included our MRE supply - full meals with heaters. They are actually pretty good. I suggest you pick up a couple of single items to try.

It is key to buy food you will want to eat during an emergency and you should also know how to “use” them ahead of time. Nothing worse than trying to read directions in a situation where things are chaotic.

Amazing the mental advantage you have when you can consume food that you will actually enjoy.

Our planning progressed to a 3 month window that includes freeze dried, canned goods, etc all the way up to 12 months of prepration.

It is also good to prepare for more than you need to be in a position to help others or use for trade in a truly dire situation.

Of course RD you know I started gardening a couple of years ago and now even have our own cattle, etc...

What a difference when you take control of your own food supply! Everything tastes so much better. In the early days of doing this I had friends and family who thought we were nuts but now many are asking what they have to do to get there.

Good luck with it...The Ready Store has excellent customer service as well.

Hey! Thanks for the good info! As you may know my garden is small and I can everthing that we don't eat fresh. Lots of tomatoes and sauces and other veggies. The MREs would be for a hurricane type situation that my wife and I found ourselves in when Katrina roared through our area and knocked out power for two weeks. No power means the gas stations are not pumping gas. We had a small generator that would power the refrige and a few lights and a fan if we could get the gas for the generator! It must have been hell for those on the coast because we were 200 miles inland to the north and the power lines that fed our area were totally wiped out for two weeks! The radio stations were alerting every one when a gas station had gas and power, but they could have been a 60 mile round trip away and gas in the vehicles was also needed to get there and then somewhere else if needed.

nothing like experience. Burying propane is a really good option :) Doesn’t degrade and most generators can be equippred with tri-fuel setup...to run gas, natural gas or propane.

We have a gas generator that would run our big chest freezer and frig. How does one set it up to run on propane?

Depends on the model you have. You can find a lot of information here. If I can be of any specific help just message me.

My father lived in the town about 30 miles away. They had the major fuel tank farms and trucking firms to move the gas to the stations. Made a trip to bring him a ice chest full of ice. When I walked in he was sitting in his easy chair A/C on and watching TV! I asked him if he knew anybody who needed the ice, he said my aunt could use it. Drove to my aunt’s house and she was delighted and gave a bunch of the ice to her neighbors.

OMG what a shame. I just ordered from them! They actually expedited my order because I wasn’t a d**k and I was willing to substitute a few number 10 cans around. They rock! Sux I missed the discount.... I do love that store tho.
