Chart: Why $4-Per-Gallon Gas Is Damn Cheap (Compared to what the rest of the world pays)
Good Environment ^ | 03/21/2011

Posted on 04/05/2011 12:45:37 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

Inspired by Cord's thought-provoking post on the per gallon prices of various liquids, and by Sarah Palin's ill-informed Facebook rant on the "$4-Per-Gallon President," I decided to take a closer look at gasoline prices around the world. Mrs. Palin might be interested to learn, that the world already has quite a few $4-Per-Gallon Presidents. In fact, the world already has $6-Per-Gallon Parliaments, $7-Per-Gallon Prime Ministers, and $8-Per-Gallon Presidents!

We've collected a broad sample of gas prices from throughout the industrialized Western world in the chart below. Important to note: this chart includes only official data from throughout the European Union and North America. I've included some self-reported gas prices from a handful of relevant nations below the chart.

gas prices, gasoline, petroleum, oil,

All of the European data comes from the E.U.'s European Energy Portal website. U.S. and Canadian data come from the respective Automobile Associations.

Here are a few others countries that I thought were interesting, but for which I couldn't find official data. All of these numbers are self-reported within the past six months (unless otherwise noted) through the Gasoline-Germany website, a popular energy and petroleum forum.

An odd trend seems to be that the most of countries that have gas prices under our own, are those same countries that so many politicians routinely cite as "evil" or "undemocratic."  Does Sarah Palin want our oil economy to be more like Iran and Venezuela?

From this recent chart in the Economist, you can see that the bulk of the premium costs in most European nations is due to higher taxes and duties on crude and gasoline. Many nations recognize oil as a finite resource, and are utilizing gasoline taxes to reduce oil imports, create a more efficient transportation system, and better prepare for longer-term oil price volatility.

If the author had bother to THINK, for even a heartbeat, he would of realized the sheer idiocy of comparing the USA to countries that are smaller then many of our individual states.

Exactly, he cites the Netherlands for the glory of their cheap gasoline.

We have forty states that are each bigger than the entire country. You could bike across the Netherlands in a day.

RE: Just taking Netherlands for example, the total tax on gasoline is about 69% of the price, making the price without taxes about $2.83 per gallon.

Now why would the Dutch government put in that high a tax on gasoline unless their purpose is to DISCOURAGE DRIVING?

In fact, I think that’s the rationale behind what they do. Holland however, is a geographically small country that makes public transportation viable throughout. You will kill the US economy if you impose that kind of tax on gasoline.

Well well well..Lets talk about the Euro and how well their VAT tax is. And that, is why they pay so high in prices.

This is the UNITED STATES of AMERICA. I dont care what the “F” they pay. That. is. their. problem.

If the rest of the world started jumping off cliffs, there’s a certain part of the population that’d tell us to do it too.

OMG, you are comparing our gas prices with their bits of tax to Socialist who have both tax and the cost of their free health care added to their gas price.

Not a rational comparison.

It's disgusting and if gas prices had doubled under Bush/Chenny the media screaming would be unbelievable.

But here's another way to look at it.

Gas is less than 20 cents a gallon... if you pay in silver coin. Actually two Roosvelt dimes should get you a gallon of gas and about a buck fifty in change!

Silver Coin Calculator

Very eye opening if you look at the prices of goods and services in terms of the value of traditional US silver coin. Really drives home what the Fed has done to us. Interesting times indeed.

We can find sources of cheap energy and fuel or we can sit in the dark and huddle together in cities near our work, and abandon our cherished way of life.

What Europe does and what dictators do are their business.

So because the rest of the worls taxes the living crap out of gas, we should be on our knees thanking our benevolent government masters?
That sound about right?

The whole world pays the same freaking amount for fuel. It’s the taxes that make the difference.

I could care less what the foreigners have permited their govenments to charge them for gas. They deserve what they have permitted.

Europeans took a soaking after falling for the International watermelon global warming scam. If they are that stupid, they deserve it. They had plenty of warning about the scam from the US but thought they were “smarter.”

“Smart” people like that pay out the whazoo for gas.

Truly “free” men don’t stand for this nonsense. energy...God’s gift to his people, is available in prolific amounts in the USA.

The DC overlords understand that “free” access to energy liberates men from Federal dependency. And if they can’t tax the air you breath, tax the bejesus out of your children and grandchildren to fund their Federal fascist fantasies, then by God...you’re GONNA shut up and pay your 8.00/gallon...with a 4.00/gallon Federal Tax.

It is long past time due for the servants in DC to be reminded for whom they work.

Only in his liberal dipsh*t fantasy, the liberal dipsh*ts are holding onto the reigns of power. These stupid liberal dipsh*ts keep forgetting who has all the guns in this country. If they really want to start something, it will not end well for them.
