I think there are two relevant facts about this time that need to be considered. First, Mercer Island historically had a very strong Jewish enclave. As David Horowitz and others have shown, there have been large pockets of ethnic Jews who were lead elements in radical America. Second, don't underestimate the role of the Unitarian Church. Its "open-minded" traditions have often served to front leftist ideals and programs.

Washington’s only Jewish high school was defaced Thursday night by anti-Semitic graffiti, including swastikas and references to gas chambers.

There is truth in what you say and I know more about Mercer Island than I ever wanted to know. There is no doubt that both Mercer Island and Seattle are currently hotbeds of leftism. However, back in 1958 MI was much closer to being a balanced American community, including their Jewish population.
“Two teachers at this school, Val Foubert and Jim Wichterman, both Frankfurt School style Marxists, taught acritical theory curriculum to students which included rejection of societal norms, attacks on Christianity, the traditional family, and assigned readings by Karl Marx.” (from one of the articles / sorry no link)
When Wichterman included those reading assignments in his curriculum, the parents were up in arms. The mothers of the students actually had a protest march against the school.
The significant thing about all this “hotbed of Marxism” talk that I noticed is that the first round of articles plus that film done by Tim Jones introduced the idea. Then the lefty press shut up about it. It was picked up big time by all the right wing blogs, internet news sites and some columnists who beat it to death. The next thing that happened is all the left wing sites started pointing a finger at the right wingers who reprinted the articles or used excerpts. The Obots declared the material to be “inflammatory” and the tactics being used a “right wing smear”.
It ended up looking like conservatives were grasping at straws trying to unjustly label Zero a commie - you know anything to keep from having a black president because they are all racists.
I think that’s the game that was being played as well as to establish a foundation for Obama’s communist beliefs which would become more obvious as time went by.
