Who Won the Republican Debate
Elephant Watcher ^ | May 5, 2011

"So who won the debate? In a political debate, of course, there is no such thing as "winning the argument." Instead, candidates aim to achieve certain goals. In this case--even for Pawlenty--the goal was to attract media attention. The debates also present an opportunity for the candidates to prove their rhetorical ability. So who succeeded?

No candidate performed in an outstanding way. Two candidates, Santorum and Johnson, performed poorly. But Cain, Paul, and Pawlenty each achieved what they set out to do...."

100% correct. Cain has the Fire in the belly I’m looking for. We need street fighters and we need them now.

1. Johnson might as well go home.
2. I think Cain gets kudos because he seems so personally affable.

He needs to be a Governor, or at least a Senator.

He needs to be President.

I dont know if Santorum will get the nomination or even win a single primary but no one will work harder and campaign harder than him. His 2006 effort was impressive but unfortunately it was just a bad year for republicans.

Herman Cain is undoubtly the best Republican Tea Party (non GOP) canidate we have. We would be most fortunate to have him as our President. He would destroy Obama in an election. GO CAIN!!!

Let’s start with him endorsing ARLEN SPECTOR over pro-life Pat Toomey in the primary 6 years ago. He has done this in the past. When it comes to party over principle he has gone party.

Free Republic conservatives and teapartiers are the Big Losers.

-Cain will soak up a bunch of support from grassroots populist conservatives. -Santorum getting enough attention from pro-lifers. -Paul gets his populist following. None of the 3 will be nominated.

All of this will detract from the ability to get support for the serious conservative contenders. The GOP establishment will not split into 5 candidates ... they will quickly unite behind one, maybe 2, candidates.

RINOs win, we lose.

Regardless, I am off to NH mountains to fight Daniels & Romney.

Santorum—because he absolutely knocked the Mitch Daniels question out of the park.

I would vote for anyone that participated in that debate except for Ron Paul. But Ron Paul won it. He electrified the audience. If he gets the nomination, we’re in big trouble.

Please. There were 50-100 Paul supporters in the crowd who went in knowing they wouldn't follow the "no applause" rule. Their purpose was to make Ron Paul's lunatic answers look good.

Ron Paul would be a disaster on foreign policy and especially, Israel. Nope, no way for me would I or could I ever vote for him.

I like Ron Paul for consistantcy, I disagree with some of his take on foreign policy. Economic policy he is a home run hitter, the Government needs to be decreased by 1/2 and our Defense budget can’t stay it’s current size either or this country is sunk. Now that Bin Laden is dead a big objective of the last decade is complete. Iraq and Afghanistan must stand on their own now, the boogieman is gone. Gary Johnson says bring the troops home now, and I think we can move in that direction now. We have to fund the defense of this country not all our allies as well that is their job to do.

We will hit the debt ceiling next week and Reagan was right on Peace through Strength in the Cold War, but the Soviets were financing a lot of our debt and making our products. The Chinese are much smarter and better at Economics than the Russians ever were.

>>>>>”I called BS on FOX and Shannon for saying Ron Paul was the father of the TEA party.. That would Be rick Santelli as far as I’m concerned.”>>>>>

It was Santelli, who was made famous in three hours by Rush and Drudge. Rush went wall to wall with it and Drudge went red end of the world headlines, and by the end of that day in Feb 2009, Santelli and CNBC were household words.

I even know how Rush found out about it......

Pawlenty and Cain did the best overall.

Johnson was thoughtful but uninspiring.

Paul gave his routine answers and remains a kook.

Santorum came in a loser for the Senate, but wanted people to think he was a winner. Instead he came across pompous and sanctimonious.

Agree that Cain nailed it. Cain has lots of business experience with a number of very large corporations. We have a politician in the WH and we can see how that is working out. I would not vote for Ron Paul for any reason. The CNN poll said he won. They want him to win because he would not be a challenge for Obama. The liberal media is worried that Obama might actually get a good challenger. Herman Cain would be Obams nightmare.

Obama won.

Any "Republican" debate with Santorum is full of crap.
