“A restaurant I worked at used to cut any uniformed cops’ bills in half.

I thought it was a nice gesture. Never thought it corrupt.”

I’m not sure, but I wonder what police departments’ official policies are on businesses giving discounts/freebied to their officers ? I’d always looked at it as a busniess bribing cops to hang around and scare off potential criminals. Given their generouns retirement packages, it’s not like cops are underpaid.

I guess we are talking about the difference between bribes and respectful gifts, and I suppose there is a fuzzy line.

In the case of my restaurant I don’t think it was considered payment. We weren’t in a bad neighborhood and didn’t need extra police protection.

Sure...the restaurant management will comp the cops' meals for security reasons. They'll also do it because the cops may get an emergency call in the middle of their meal, and have to leave the restaurant immediately, before they have an opportunity to pay the check. IOW...there's a good chance the cops aren't going to be able to pay their check anyway, so the establishment figures they might as well comp them their meals.
