The Men Who Held Back The Sea (A Lesson In Reality)

After the Washingtonian drama of the past few weeks, the nation is now reflecting, and seeing the tangible proof of the damage which our politicians have once again done to our economy. As I have perused various conservative blogs, forums and Twitter accounts, the reaction of choice seems to be anger. This anger stems from feeling betrayed, and again lied to (I imagine the liberals may feel the same anger). Many of the conservative feel that many of our "hardline" conservatives pulled "Scott Browns" on us. Without thinking too deeply, this makes sense. We, the American people, got more rubbish placed on the weighty pile of crap that Obama had already placed and stifled the economy with!

The fact remains, default was not an option. What was done had to be done.

Nope, and we would not have defaulted regardless of the debt extension.

Obama would have raised the debt ceiling himself.

Contrary to what the Lefties say, he does not have the authority to raise the debt ceiling....

Then there is the issue of the "Super Congress". You know, that scheme to bridle the "freshmen Tea Party Congressmen".

The article is BS!

I don’t think he has authority either. I’m just saying, it could have been a huge, legal and financial mess if that had happened. Worse than what happened today.

The S & P credit rating downgrade was expected and long overdue. It should have happened when the deficit jumped from $458 billion in 2008 to $1.4 trillion in 2009. That is at the point that the Federal government spending trajectory lost all rational credibility as it flew in the face of the 16% drop in revenue to the Federal government in 2009, the 2008 collapse and a dismal economic outlook going forward. Anyone with any financial sense at all would have reined in government spending at that point to maintain the deficit to less than $500 billion, forgotten about all “initiatives” and helping big business and set upon the work of unshackling small business and individuals by starting to gut the Federal government.

It was not publicly considered at that point because it would have been very politically incorrect since establishment Republicans, independents and libertarians would not have supported eliminations of Departments any more than Democrats would have at that point.

Things have to get horrifically bad before most people will listen to wise advice.

America - when will you listen ?

The Federal government is an obsolete albatross of epic proportions that needs to be almost completely disbanded. It has become a giant vulture feeding on the remains of our flesh and bones and it holds us captive.

Unfortunately, now, since we’ve allowed Congress to issue so much debt in our name, AFTER that Federal government disbandment is accomplished, our citizens will still need to pay higher taxes for at least a decade - with ZERO new government borrowing - until government debt can all be paid off, and only then can taxes be lowered and the burden eased on the people. The poor must find prosperity, for the rich can only give their wealth once, and then all are poor.

Social Security and Medicare do not need reform. They need to be phased out over time so that EVERY citizen will once again take full responsibility for their own retirement, and families and churches will help where that custom fails.

But the Federal government absolutely needs to fulfill each and every obligation that it has made to everyone else. This is because a government needs to do that in order to be taken seriously and not seen as a trickster and by other nations.

That is why the United States originally honored all debts from the Revolutionary War. It said something. Something moral. We are not a band of thieves. We will do what it takes to live and die with honor. It was a rejection of the idea of getting away with a technicality, that since the Republic was not yet formed when the debts were incurred, they were not the Republic’s, when, indeed they were, as the Republic owed part of it’s existence to the debts. We did not recognize “free money”, we were not looking for a handout. There was no international aid given to us by the wealthy nations who thought it their duty to help us eat and live. We earned everything that we had.

This Puritan work ethic made America so successful and created such a wonderful reputation of being able to repay her debts, the deceiver tempted her government with the freedom with which the government could borrow. And thus the nation began to go down a slippery slope - as it’s government, over the decades, came to expect and then rely on this borrowing ability. Instead of building up enormous surplus during the fat years, so the government would have it’s coffers full during the lean years, the Federal government spent the fruits of our labors during the fat years. And then borrowed against the fruits of our future labors, and spent all that money as well.

Men of ill character have chosen to run in campaigns for public office. Men who sought the office, not men who were drafted for the office and accepted it out of a sense of duty and responsibility to serve. Now, public office is a well-paying career in and of itself. Those seeking public office are gainseekers, and those seeking fame and adoration of themselves. Our politics has divided into two teams and become a sport, an entertainment. And we place public funds in the hands of such men and are surprised when they turn on us and dictate that they know what is best for us and they use the public funds to further their own ends, which are to hold public office and the rights and benefits thereof for their whole life, and to gleefully lie to us with all sorts of acting and deceit, saying that they know what is best for us if we would only elect them again and give them even more.
