Who Was The Winner of Tonight's Debate?
Elephant Watcher ^ | August 11, 2011

Posted on 08/11/2011 8:19:24 PM PDT by DeskCaptain

"The third primary debate was held tonight. Which candidates helped themselves, and who ended the night in a worse position?

Tonight was Jon Huntsman's first appearance at a primary debate. Unlike Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain, who offered "red meat to the base" during their first appearances, Huntsman just fit in. Being a firebrand is simply not in Huntsman's personality, and he never attacked Mitt Romney, the man standing in his way in New Hampshire. Huntsman also suffered from receiving few questions. It's still unclear whether Huntsman is willing to do what's necessary to make a genuine run for the presidency...."

Pawlenty was pathetic and mean spirited.

That's exactly what I felt seeing this debate. Tim Pawlenty just looked mean. I think he knows he messed the last one up and maybe just tried too hard. It came off as just "mean".

I thought Rick Santorum did very well, but I don't think it was enough to push him far enough up from where he was. We'll see.

I agree with many others here that Newt was absolutely amazing in this debate. I've counted him out because of his campaign implosion, but I've always thought he was a smart man, smart, sensible, and wise too. He was just smack "right on" tonight, as he is when given the chance. Good going, Newt.

However, overall I felt a little empty tonight. Nothing gave me that fire in my britches.

Thank you.

But it's easy when you're 10' away and those two are in the frame !

It’s debatable but Santorum may be the most conservative of the candidates (for now anyway). I agree with your picks but think Santorum was the biggest winner (gained the most) although he’s still a huge underdog.

Newt was great - he’s brilliant but don’t see how he can possibly win.

For some reason I just don’t see substance in Bachmann - maybe I’m wrong but I don’t see that much originality with her or actual actions in her job that make her stand out....she’s a good talker however. I don’t think she holds a candle to Sarah.

I sure don’t remember Obama getting questions like these from anyone.

“Twenty dollar whore” was the film quote. But yeah, Newt can debate with the best of them.

Romney won because no one laid a glove on him.

Newt had a strong performance; so did Huntsman.

Bachmann was weak tonight.

Perry may have been the biggest winner.

The media clearly doesn’t want a Conservative to make headway. Romney, Huntsman, Pawlenty, the media is much more comfortable with people like that.

I loved it that Newt got history into the debates too. I loved him slapping down that snotty Chrisy Wallace..Herman Cain too got a good slap down..I was surprised at Bret Baier and his snotty question and that dunce Byron York??He owes Michelle an apology...and every network especially Greta should smack that one down...bet Greta will if given the chance.

The only one who stood out at all tonight was Newt. Too bad he hasn’t really got a prayer. But he can surely frame the national debate.

In the earlier debates, Cain and Bachmann stood out, but were ok tonight, no more.

I love Santorum, but he’s not getting the necessary traction.

Romney played it safe, which he could afford to do. He got all the positive GOP attention he needed earlier today at the IA fair with the Dem hecklers. Even Levin gave him kudos for that.

Perry may have been the biggest winner.

Amen to that, brother! :)

Huntsman and Pawlenty took gas and won’t be around much longer. Unfortunately, Pawlenty may have taken Bachman with him. He went after her hard.

The rest did fine with Newt and Cain doing the best.

That may have been what I was seeing tonight. You just kind of pointed that out. I feel like Romney, Huntsman, and Pawlenty got a little more time than the others... or something... just couldn't put my finger on it.

I'll tell you what though...

I did not like Huntsman to begin with, but when he started making fun of prayer, saying Rick Perry could say a prayer for them (if you didn't see it, believe me that it was said sarcastically), I was furious with him.

To stand up there with so many conservatives and to start making fun of faith and prayer was just totally offensive. Huntsman is a LOSER in my book!

Newt is a good speaker, but sooo arrogant. Santorum too political. Bachman never saw a camera she didn’t like. Huntsman..blecch. Romney..too much of a Ken doll and too much baggage with his health care bill in Massachusetts. Cain..not bad, but a little out of his league. Pawlenty..not bad. Ron Paul good fresh ideas, but zero charisma.

I guess I liked Ron Paul the most though. This country needs fresh ideas more than it needs charisma. I’d like to see Christy as President, Ron Paul as VP, Newt as Secretary of State, Cain as Treasury Secretary.

Yep..I’m a dreamer..
