Former Union Prez: Union May Lose 40% of Members – Including Him – if Teacher Right to Work Passes
Capitol Confidential ^ | 9/16/2011 | Tom Gantert

As a teacher in the Grand Ledge Public Schools and a former teachers union president, John Ellsworth says the various education reforms coming from Michigan’s Republican-led government are “despicable.” He thinks the much-talked about “right-to-teach” legislation for public school employees, which would make joining a teachers union voluntary, is part of “a continued attack” blaming teachers for school woes.

Yet, even Ellsworth says he would drop his Michigan Education Association membership if right-to-work for teachers became a reality.

“Yes. I think I would,” Ellsworth said.

Depending upon what districts would be willing to offer to teachers who declined union representation, Ellsworth estimated that somewhere between 10 percent and 40 percent of teachers would bolt from the MEA.

The reason? He says some don’t think they are getting real value from the $90 per month in union dues he says they pay.

which would make joining a teachers union voluntary,

I don't see the problem here. What if a teacher doesn't want to use his/her own money to pay for democrat politicians? What if they're Republicans? Why would an American citizen HAVE to support democrats in order to work for a living?

I suspect they’ll lose a lot more members than that.

Sounds like a quick way to give yourself a $1100 raise.

I never cease to be amazed by union types who demand the right to organize while relentlessly working to prevent the right to opt-out of union membership.

My teamster father-in-law swore to me that union membership was optional and not forced. I had to politely tell him he was full of crap.

Oh and “Big Business” is equivalent to the F-word.

It’s clear the idea of “voluntary” union membership is a foreign term to these people. The unions have been at or near the seat of people in the upper Midwest so long, the fact their power base is now seeing some ripples is causing major trauma to their psyches. Let it continue!!!

Teaching was intended to be a profession of service, not a political bloc.

They bite the hand that feeds them. When the companies shut down and move overseas to escape, they can't understand why.

Remember when teachers did it for the love of teaching our youth instead of unionizing and demanding less work and more pay? And having sex with the students?

So wait, he’s bitching, yet ADMITTING the union is worthless anyway.

Minus the home repair and medical costs.

“Oh and ‘Big Business’ is equivalent to the F-word.”

And it never ceases to amaze me that union members don’t get the fact that unions are “big business”, too. Nothing is more duplicitous and upside-down than the logic of liberals, marxists, unions, and Democrats. IMHO.

"He says some don’t think they are getting real value from the $90 per month in union dues he says they pay."

Define "real value".... such as paid thugs to go out and trample capitol lawns, intimidate politicians and tea partiers, etc.?

How good is your organization if you have to force people to join? I’m in a right to work state which is just perfect.

I’ve got a nephew (here in our “right to work” state) who recently went to work for a large defense contractor. He was politely informed that while he did not HAVE to join the union, not doing so would be “frowned upon”. It worked ... he’s now a reluctant member of the union AND $17 poorer per week AND his money will clearly be going to support politicians and policies that he is completely opposed to.

Note to the former union prez: Welcome to real life without coercion and thugs. Without either of these two clubs, unions are a bunch of wussies.

I will bet the actual thought of working in a voluntary-union culture is scaring the poor sod to death.

As an America, I find it unbelievable that someone living in my country has a problem with making union membership VOLUNTARY. Unreal! What America really needs right now is MORE AMERICANS!
