Gingrich has telegraphed that there will be a prominent place for both Palin and Cain in a Gingrich administration. Cain did Gingrich a big favor with that one-on-one debate. Empathy can also build strong friendships. I have also noticed that prominent black conservatives have come out almost exclusively for Gingrich (J.C. Watts, Thomas Sowell, and unofficially Herman Cain).
