Florida Republican Rep. Allen West may be the Republican candidate for vice president in 2012.

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said at a Republican Palm Beach County fundraiser that if he won the Republican presidential nomination, he would strongly consider a Floridian as his running mate.

“Allen West would certainly be someone you’d look at,” Gingrich told NBC affiliate WPTV.

West responded, “We don’t know what the future holds, but I’m always willing to serve my country.”

“I have to pray about it and I have to clear it with my wife and two daughters,” he added. “I never thought that seven years ago when I retired here I’d be a United States Congressman.” [ For complete coverage of politics and policy, go to Yahoo! Politics ]

Elected in the November midterm election, West is one of two Republican African-Americans serving in Congress. He has rapidly emerged as a national conservative star.

HMMM, could really be a team that would be very hard to beat. And make it very hard for the race-baters to continue playing their dirty game against the GOP with the distinguished Col. West in the VP position.

There are a lot of good prospects out there, including those who have been in this contest. It would be good to see many of them selected to work with Gingerich in various capacities and in his Cabinet: Santorum, of course, Herman Cain, Sarah Palin, even Perry and Bachman. I think we had some very intelligent, capable and confident contenders and it was good to hear from all of them as the field narrowed.

Even with their differences, to me, at least, there was one resounding and uniform message that united them with Americans...that of the need to restore America to upholding the principles and morality that made us strong and a nation that has been favored in God's eyes. That has given me a lot of hope for our future.

Bachmann needs to do what she can to try to keep her House seat.

Palin has bigger fish to fry, so to speak. Salmon, most likely. And then maybe Secy. of Energy, with the charter to reduce it by 90% in size.

And Ron Paul as Surgeon General, give him a big scalpel and let him cut that trillion out of the federal budget.

that’s what I’m hearing as well, but nothing - including the west stuff is finalized and I could see Newt considering it still...My bigger question is around the thought of Newt only doing one term - does anyone think that might be the case?

You’re so right. If we remove their race card ploy, the Left is so screwed! Clyburn and the rest are already calling Newt racist because of his “janitor” comments.

Palin as cabinet position Bachmann stays where she is.

Gingrich VP’s short lists (he did say Romney but I won’t post the link as I think he may have changed his mind)

No ticket with Newt at the top will be “boring”! Newt's problem won't be energizing grass roots conservatives, it will be reassuring moderate Pubs and independents. IMHO Kasich would fit the bill, but is still a good solid conservative, with the experience to be president if it comes to that.

Kasich isn’t even popular in his own state right now. West brings Florida and some of the black vote.

Rubio’s parents were not natural born US citizens. He can not become president if the president were to expire!

If a woman is on the ticket, it will likely be Susana Martinez, governor of NM.
