Prayer Request
Former Fetus

Posted on 02/12/2012 8:12:04 PM PST by Former Fetus

I have received an email from Binyamin L. Jolkovsky, Editor in Chief of Jewish World Review. He's requesting prayers for Yisroel ben Chana Tzirel, a rabbinic mentor of his. This is someone who has been more like a father to him, and is considered to be among the most prominent Orthodox rabbis in America. He was rushed to the hospital this morning and had emergency surgery.

In the words of Mr. Jolkowsky, every prayer is precious to the Almighty. The power of prayer is often spoken of. But those of us who truly believe in it, act on it.

Thanks!

This is Rav Yisroel Belsky, the head of the Jewish religious school Yeshiva Torah Vodaas and renowned expert on Jewish law.

Thanks! I googled both names and found out that Yisroel ben Chana Tzirel is his name for Tehillim. I’m sorry, as a Christian I do not understand. Would you be so kind as to explain to me the reason for having 2 names? Is one of the names a title more than a “name”?

Jews traditionally did not have surnames. One was known by a given name, followed by “son of”/”daughter of” the father’s given name.

For certain purposes, such as praying for health, one is known as son/daughter of mother’s given name.

Rav Yisroel Belsky, whose father is Berel, would be called to read the Torah as “Yisroel ben Berel”. In praying for his health, his mother’s name, Chana Tzirel, is used. Thus “Yisroel ben Chana Tzirel”.

The term Jew, incidentally, is not an official designation. One is known as a ben/bat (son/daughter) of Israel.

Thanks, that’s very interesting. Does it mean that Belsky is his regular surname, for non-religious business?

I am so happy for the family and Rabbi Tzirel. May God continue to bless him with health and recovery. I can only imagine that the family and friends feel like a weight has been lifted off their shoulders. Thank you for the update, FF.

Good evening my friends. This morning I was informed that there appeared to have been a setback in the recovery of Rabbi Yisroel ben Chana Tzirel. A few minutes ago I got yet another email informing me that he is now in critical condition. So, once more time I’m appealing to the FR prayer warriors to intercede for the health of the Rabbi. Thanks and God bless y’all.
