Not in Iowa, unfortunately. We moved from NE Indiana (10 acres) and paid more for our two acres here.

No doubt. I miss one or at max 2 days a year because of weather. So what? The trains run along the Mississippi about four miles away and we can hear them on a still night. We have deer (field rats at times), raccoons, opossums, field mice, squirrels, chipmunks, bats, and fireflies in season. We also have those damnable Japanese beetles that removed all peaches on one tree before we could get to them.
I drive 20 minutes to work through fields of corn, alfalfa, soybeans and wheat. There are four Casey's gas stations within 10 minutes of my house, and a full lineup of 3 Super Walmarts, a dozen Hy-Vees, and several Best Buys, Targets, Menards, Lowes and Home Depots, and, well, you name it in the nearby communities.
But in our screened in back deck, I can sit in the evening with my wife and read, talk, or just listen to the tree frogs. As I write this, I kick myself because I don't do it often enough.

FYI Slash refers to m/m or f/f “romance.” Which is hugely popular with the hags & definitely not my bag. 50 shades of crap is BDSM-Lite for old ladies and repressed housewives without imagination.
The feministas got really pissed at the old, bodice-ripper “rape without consent” books (despite the fact that, yes as trashy as they were, they were well-written, mostly historically accurate epics with heroines who kicked metaphorical ass). 50 Shades and similar books are popular because they “empower” the Mary-Sue heroine, since she gives verbal/written permission to be “raped”/spanked/tied-up/whatever.
Modern females like this because A)The heroine is in “control” because it’s what she wants & B)The dark mysterious covers give them the illusion of reading a “respectable” book.
Meh, give me oldies like Rosemary Rogers “Wicked Loving Lies” or Christine Monson’s “Stormfire.” Crazy plots, euphemistic sex-scenes and loads of fun. Romance readers read to fill a “hole” in their lives; I read them for the adventure not the amateurish sex, so all the book s I read are 30-20 years old.
As for SW, I liked it but it would have been far better if Lucas had left the direction and final script to others as he did with parts 5 and 6.
I don't know if Ellison is still a leftist jerk like he was, but he's one helluva writer.

Sure enough. My level of involvement in fanfic is generally to flee at high speed. I knew slash was smutty fanfic, which was already really too much information.
I love old-school stuff where books were 500-700 pages long. The last one I read was "Texas Star" by Deana James written in '87. It's an awesome western about a Texan bounty hunter who tracks down a female killer in Mexico. Now that was a true woman and and true hero, with no "written contracts." The author dedicates to the book to Joel McCrea, Zane Grey, Hopalong Cassidy, John Wayne, etc., so it's a real western, and the only geldings are the horses.
But I am not a typical romance reader. I like the old trashy books that you'd have to hide the cover so no one would look at you oddly. Plus, as a married woman, I don't read for the sex; that's like a gourmet food-chef reading "Taste of Home" for recipes. :)
The old stuff actually had adventurous plots,was well-researched, and meticulously written. It's a shame women were shamed into despising them all because the men were...well, men.
I read one decent fanfic about Darth Vader.
Then when I realized that fanfic was written mostly by women who really needed to get ******, I never looked back. The only thing worse than fanfic are American remakes of movies that came out less than 10 years prior.

Because I hang out in fen I have friends that right fanfic, I’ve gotten very good at politely saying hell no. Life is just too short to read something you know is gonna suck. Especially when they’re in a world that has books, if they were any good they could get paid, they aren’t, nuf said.

Yes, and how many years ago was that? The past 10+ years have not been a high point in Hollywood cinema. The ‘90s was the last decade of truly great films.
There were 3 versions of Maltese Falcon made in 10 years, the 1931 and 1941 (Bogie) versions were both called Maltese Falcon, Satan Met a Lady was done in 1936. Hollywood has always loved remakes.
I’ve got some truly great films made in the last 10 years, they just tend not to be the tent poles you have to go find them. Though even some of the tent poles, Hunger Games is a DAMN good movie. But really for story telling this is the age of TV, owing to their ability to use many more hours, and finally their willingness to really USE the hours they have available, the depth of story telling on TV is leagues above even the great movies.
The Hunger Games was a damn good movie, and what's more it didn't deviate from the book unnecessarily and added characterization where it was needed. I can't wait for the sequels. Now there are movies to look forward to!
Here I admit to being a hypocrite of sorts, because I frequently mock the Twilight Moms who drag their teen and preteen daughters to the movies to gush. On the day THG opened, there I was with my 14 year-old. I looked around and saw nothing but older women with their daughters and thought, “Oh, crap, I'm one of them now.”
But the Hunger Games Trilogy is not a love story, although romance is part of it. It's so much more than that, and I'm glad guys realize it's not just a chick-flick.

That’s where tastes vary. Being a long time comic book fan I love the current wave of comic book movies, and not just for existing but for finally moving away from the camp that had dominated earlier attempts. They’re actually just putting it out there and doing it well, really hitting the parts of the stories that are why I’m a fan of comics.
The difference between THG moms and Twilight moms is THG moms are bringing their daughters to really good movies with a really good story and a lot of strong positive roll models for boys and girls (cross gender too, Catniss is a good roll model for any kid); and Twilight moms are bringing their kids to terrible movies with a terrible story filled with lame characters that are mostly crash test dummy victims of life. And WTH is up with a 120 year old vampire hitting on high school chicks, that’s just wrong.
Yup tastes are definitely personal...I like schlock and cheese and admit it proudly. The last comic book movie I enjoyed in the theater was “300” so that sums up my tastes. Loved the soundtrack, too. (But I’m a woman so it’s ok!)
Oh I loved 300. It was actually pretty campy, but in a good way. Of course I’m a big Frank Miller fan. So I don’t think we enjoyed the movie the same way.
I am indeed aware of his two OL episodes which James Cameron razed for The Terminator.
Yeah, especially “Soldier.” So many similarities.
